insane idea (?!) stormy monday for hard rock?
« on: March 21, 2006, 06:39:19 PM »
the hard rocking potentials of stormy monday pickups are rarely mentioned, usually the jazz and blues powers are mentioned.

however, i've been getting into UFO and MSG recently. michael schenker mentions in interviews that he likes 60s and 70s Flying Vs with patent number pickups.

as the stormy mondays are based on those types of pickups, any thoughts about using stormy mondays for hard rock? or would they turn to ugly mush?

Riff Raff is based on the patent no. Alnico V humbuckers of the 60s..........Stormy Monday and The Mule are two of the different PAF winds which exhibite the best of the PAF tones.
Funnily enough any of those 3 do a great rock tone............you won't get hi gain help so you have to work for your money but the reward is fantastic dynamics and a really open tone-amazing for crunch and lovely sweet solo tone with plenty of punch.

tim: thanks for the clarification... its quite often you explain the RR/SM/Mule distinction - but this time i think i finally understand :)

so riff raff then... but i would be interested to hear some dirty stormy monday clips some time, as its normally toted as some kind of gentle beast.

When my amp's up and running again I'll get something down if I can get a decent o/d tone out of it. I've had it doing Carlos Santana's 'Smooth' before

However I'd agree it is generally gentle as you said.

I'd love to hear a SM in the bridge position...anyone out there got such a thing?

Yeah mules do great tone for anything. Even metal so long as you dont expect the pickup to do all the work  :P

I've had SMs in both positions on my '70 Goldtop and loved them.........I've got Mules in there at the moment but it varies depending on what I'm doing, last Music Lve I had MQs in it!Anyway, SMs can rock out in the bridge too, nice and bright chunk!

Presumably the "coming soon to an Internet near you" new BKP site will have bridge and neck clips of the SM (along with everything else).

IMO, it would be cool to hear pup clips of pickups doing "uncharacteristic" things, exactly like the SMs playing metal or the Warpigs doing rockabilly.  I think it helps show off the pickup more (since I expect the 'Pig to rule on brutal metal sounds, so a clip demonstrating that won't actually teach me much!).  I guess that's what the Players section is for, in a way, but there don't seem to be a lot of Stormy Monday clips of any kind there, let alone "Stormy Metal" clips. ;)

^+1 on the "uncharacteristic" thing.

I know a MM will rule on shred/metal for example, but I might like to hear the blues sounds.

Still, probably a little unfeasible because:

(a) I'm getting to the point where I can pretty much get a guitar for each sound I want, so don't really want to compromise the main tone of the guitar for another tone I might use 5% of the time (e.g. if i want a metal guitar, i'm not going to buy a pickup with a better blues tone if the metal tone is worse, lol), and

(b) I think the clips have already been recorded, so it's a bit late, lol.

This is not a problem with which I find myself burdened! :P

Ah, it's never to late to record more clips! :)

(a) me neither as yet, i only have two guitars, but i'm going to go for guitars aimed at specific styles pretty much from now on. :D

(b) true, but it's unlikely they'll get round to it for a while.
