An album I'm looking forward too...
« on: March 09, 2006, 11:10:59 AM »
...with just an slight element of dread in case it's shite.

Next month, 18 years on from the original, Queensryche release Operation: Mindcrime 2 which takes up the story 20 years after the original.   8O

A bit of history.  I first discovered Queensryche though Operation: Mindcrime.  Or more specifically, through Tommy Vance (RIP goat bless him) playing Suite Sister Mary on the Friday Rock Show.  Suite Sister Mary is an 11:46 song of epic proportions with choirs and a shite-hot female vocalist (Pamela Moore) duetting with Geoff Tate, and lashings of dark/creepy atmospherics.  After hearing this song, the following day I was scrabbling around borrowing money from people to by the album (on vinyl, natch).  When I got it home, I sat down and listened to the whole album in stunned silence, and when it finished I flipped it over and did the same again.  The quality of the writing and musicianship on this record is just staggering, and the story that unfolds (yes, it's a concept album) is both disturbing and gripping.

Over the years, this album is probably the most played record in my collection.  In fact I wore out my original vinyl copy and had to re-buy it on CD a few years later.

I specifically remember a late night coding sessions on my Commodore 64 which started at 6pm and went right through to 7am.  I had Operation: Mindcrime playing on repeat the whole time.  That's how much I love this album.

Iron Maiden had their own concept album (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) due out shortly after Mindcrime was released, and Bruce Dickinson has gone on record stating that after hearing Mindcrime he turned to the rest of Maiden and said "$%&#!  We're in trouble!" or words to that effect.

So now, we have a follow-up to, basically favourite album of all time on the cards, but I haven't been too keen on some of Queensryche's recent material (they went away from their melodic prog-metal roots, and had a bash at stripped down Grunge rock *shudder*, losing found member, guitarist Chris DeGarmo in the process), so I'm quite nervous that they might ruin the Mindcrime story, but also hopeful that maybe this will be a glorious return to form.

Pamela Moore is returning to sing the parts of Mary, and for the first time the mysterious Dr. X is being vocalised... by none other than Ronnie James Dio! 8O

This has such great potential, both good and bad, that I'm almost a nervous wreck thinking about it.

*crosses fingers*

Please let it be good... Please let it be good... Please let it be good... Please let it be good... Please let it be good... Please let it be good... Please let it be good...

I'm looking forward to it too. Operation Mindcrime is in my top 5 favourite albums, it's just a perfect album. I've heard some good things about the new one.

Degarrmo was the driving force behind Queensryche. It's been proven that the band is just not very strong without him. He was asked to be a part of OM2 and refused. (A friend of mine happens to be friends with Geoff Tate)

It may be the best post-Degarmo album to date, but it will never touch anything from when he was involved.

Just my 2 cents. (And, for the record, I hope I'm wrong!)

Loved OMC also.
Think Tates voice is amazing.

Ever checked out WASP (well moreover Blackie Lawless's) attempt at concept album?
Crimson God.

Actually pretty good from what I have heard from it. Alot of critical acclaim on this side of the pond it seem's but not so well flaunted in UK

Yeah i have that album. The concept of it reminds me alot of Pink Floyds "the wall". The song 'crimson idol' is probably the best song on that album. His guitar tone is awesome

:D OMC is a stageringly good album !!!

I bought it on vinyl originaly myself & like muttley wore the grooves out !! I saw Queensryche play at the Town & Counrty club in Islington shortley after release. Present were Iron Maiden, Def Leppard & Peter Mench        [ Leppards manager ] all agrred that it was an outstanding album. They went on 6 months later to do the full Mindcrime Tour.

If you like Queensryche then you must check out Pagans Mind "Enigmatic Calling" This was for me the best release of last year [2005] The singer sounds exactly like Geof Tate but the band are simply stunning. Every song on this album is a killer Trust Me !!!!

I hope the songs on OMC2 are as good & rememberal as OMC1 or the album won`t survive IMHO

 :D  8)

PS OMC "Suite Sister Mary" she dies ? how can she be resurrected again  :!:

I'm with TO on this one. Degarmo was THE songwriter for QR and without his input I don't see it measuring up.

I have always been a HUGE QR fan - since the Queen of the Ryche EP

Mindcrime was awesome and De Garmo was such an important part of the band both in terms of writing /playing and vocals

QR do not sound the same since he left
I have seen them a few times since his departure and havee just felt that they are not the same
the high harmonies are gone from their sound

Anyone wishing to check out Qr at their true best should get hold of Operation Livecrime - where they do the whole Mindcrime album live
This did feature Chris De Garmo and is a stunning live gig
