Watch back removable for changing batteries
« on: January 22, 2014, 02:31:57 PM »
Anyone removed the back off a watch to change the battery? If so, is it easy to do?

My watch has a 50mm face and the shop didn't have a tool big enough, they wanted to send it back to the manufacturer, I'm looking at the tools to do it myself and they're a lot cheaper.

Fortunately the shops I brought my watch to for such jobs were always capable of doing the job, so no DIY experience here.

Cheers Stephan

I've done it - you can buy a tool that grips the 3 point system that many watches seem to have
the problem is that you will usually have invalidated your warranty in doing so

Often the problem is getting it closed well enough to be waterproof - think there is a special sealing silicone grease for that too

Feline is spot on..

Getting the back off is pretty easy and batteries are cheap but you've lost the water resistance.

You can buy O-Rings and silicone grease on ebay and that should do the trick but if it's a somewhat expensive watch I'd recommend going to these guys.

They can change batteries, reseal and water pressure test your watch to manufacturers specs sameday usually within the hour.

I use them on some very expensive watches.

Ditto warning about waterproofing. I didn't do it myself but a well meaning mate did and my watch was no longer waterproof though I only found that out whilst swimming.

I'm guessing you have a posh and trendy "GQ advert" type of watch?

I buy Casios, it's almost as cheap to replace the watch as the battery...  :P

Pair of fossil watches, one with a leather black strap, the other has a tan leather strap. Obviously these get matched to my other leather accessories aka shoes, belt, bag, wallet and gloves

You'll be ok doing it yourself with a Fossil as they are fashion watches.
