Gothic Explorer U2
« on: February 05, 2014, 02:34:27 AM »
Just acquired a (slightly beaten) Gothic Explorer and looking to fit it with new pickups better suited for pursuing Edge type stuff. Yes yes I know +++++++ gear = The Edge, but you know what I'm saying. Which I guess would be less mid range mud, clarity, more high end, and all around more versatile.

Any input greatly appreciated

I recon the Riff Raff would be the ticket for what you are asking for.

The Edge seems to have ditched his ++++++ gear for a single Fractal Axe FX II. Lot easier on everyone i would think.

Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

Probably Rebel Yells, Emeralds, or Riff Raffs.

I have an A-Bomb in my Explorer, but I don't play any U2 type stuff with it, it's strictly '80s hardcore style. A RY or Em set will still give you a lot of push without the grit and mid-grind of an A-Bomb.  I could have used a Painkiller for the same application but I had an A-Bomb on hand and it worked well.

Avoid bassy or scooped pickups with this model guitar.  Warpig was too dark by far.

You need an opensounding pickup without much compression. Either Mules or RiffRaffs will do the trick.

The Riff Raff would really suit the chimey U2 tracks, also would take the mid gain the The Edge needs now and again.

for the +++++++ gear, The Edge's favourite bit is the Electro Harmonix Memory Man. I remember that from 'It might Get Loud' I think :)

The Riff Raffs will be close to the T-Tops in his original 70s Explorer too.

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking I'll go with the Riff Raffs as they look like they'll fit the bill.

The Edge rack down to a AxeFxII is a surprise. I'd heard he had one but I didn't know he'd been trying it out live

Interesting if he takes the Fratcal + the spare fractal units with him on the next tour, but they did 3 tunes live on USA tv about 6 weeks ago and all he had was a small Fender amp, Fractal Axe FXII and the floorboard.
