BKP and Metallica 'Black Album' sound.

Just a quick thought.

Every time I listen to Metallica Black Album I keep saying to myself... Whoooa, those guitars sound great. Huge, wall crushing, still organic (for EMGs), epic sound. Still the same EMGs but much more complex, huge sound especially in comparison to the previous album at that time 'And Justice for all.

What BKPs would be the closest to capture that sound from the Black Album?
I know that Hetfield/Hammett are using EMGs for years, but what abut BKPs? And please don`t say Black Hawk straight away as it`s BKPs equivalent of active EMGs.

My guess would be either Aftermath of Miracle Man. Leaning more into MM side anyway.

I thought the MM was the Zakk Wylde EMG tone.

Anyway, the amount of layered guitars on that record was huge. It was recorded all together, as in the 'Nothing Else Matters' video, but later more additional guitars were added by Hetfield.

And Justice For All... was also heavy layered, so it wasn't that the main difference IMO. I think the Black Album was when Jaymz started using the Mark IV as a preamp, so that has to make a difference too. New producer also?

You didn't say what guitar you want the tone from, and that makes a difference. I stated recently that I got a pretty close tone... with an Abraxas on an ES-333. Put the same Abraxas on a mahogany Explorer, and you will be nowhere close.

Not knowing the guitar, my vote goes also to the Miracle Man, but depending on the guitar the Cold Sweat or C-Bomb may also do good. For the neck pickup, Cold Sweat.

The miracle man is the best thing from the BKP range.

However the biggest part of that tone is the MKIIC+ along with some very clever EQ & layering.

Id also say that the bass guitar sound is a very large portion of that tone too as it blends just right with the guitars.

well done, it only took them about 9 years to turn the knob on the amp little further since they started with Kill`em All in `83 :lol:

I think they also mixed in an ADA MP1 for the rhythm tone.  The rhythm tone on that album isn't something you can replicate with pickups alone.

I've read Mark IV into Marshall power section for the Black Album, but unfortunatly Monty Jay's site is still undergoing ressurection.
