Is tone really in the fingers experiment

Sample size is only 4 but results are interesting, seems to mostly influence brightness which I'd put down to pick angle and picking position, it would be interesting to see what happens to the sound using players who had more unique styles of holding a pick

Inconclusive. And far from scientific. Entertaining, though. I pretty much disagree with everything the host said as well. :)

The differences would surely be more noticeable - at least potentially - if they weren't using such a distorted metal tone....

Of course the player influences the sound, but the "....theory that the player and not the equipment is the single most influential part of a guitar sound" is patent nonsense.  How about another experiment - one player playing the same riff through four completely different rigs, whether it's different guitars (maybe get a Tele or a Ric in there), different amps or both?  I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I'm pretty sure I'd be able to tell the difference.

Yep, too much distortion for the player to make much difference. I think the 'tone in your fingers' is centered around how you use your equipment as much as anything else and how you interact with it, attack, vol control etc.

I always say you have to distinguish between "finger tone" and "gear tone". Refusing to accept they're two separate things, and both very important, is silly, if you ask me.

EDIT: Laptop speakers ain't gonna cut it? $%&# you. I'm not watching your video any more. Also I thought there was a massive difference? Apparently not, then. I can hear the difference between plenty of things on my "cheap laptop speakers".

The tone is in the fingers, but in Jeff Beck's fingers, and not mine :undecided:

As soon as I understood it was within seven strings I lost interest and switched off. Call me a Luddite and you'll be correct!

And yes, Jeff Beck does go over the top with whammy abuse - to such an extent that I find it incredibly difficult even to try listening to him.
I think I hate being indecisive.

It's like a rat study, yes it's a data set but we can't directly apply it to humans

I suppose the playing styles were not that different.
