Wiring questions
« on: September 15, 2014, 05:02:42 PM »
I have a mim 72 deluxe tele, and I've put in a Crawler in the bridge, and there's a a Duesenberg p90 in the neck.  It's 2* vol and 2* tone, the vol for the Crawler is 500K, the rest is all 250k.
I tried something similar earlier, and again I have the same issue: there's hardly any sound from the neck pup.   Is that because I put in one 500K

Also, I switched the Slowhands in my G&L Legacy for Trilogies in middle and neck, and now the bridge Crawler is out of phase with the middle, plus the singles sound really dark compared to the ones that went out.  What's going on there?

thanks

Jan

Hi Jan,

Highly unlikely. Either something is miswired, the pickup selector switch is broken or the neck pickup does not work properly. This must be tackled systematically, i.e. with a multimeter. Do the following:

1. Unsolder the neck pickup's hot lead from the volume pot input and measure between the pickup's hot lead and ground. You should get a reading of 5k to 7k (no idea what the Duesenberg's DC resistance is). If not, the pickup is defective and should be repaired, rewound or replaced.

2. While the pickup's hot lead is off the pot, measure the volume pot's resistance from the left tap (the input) and the right tap (which should be ground). You should get a reading between 210k and 270k. If not. the volume pot should be replaced.

3. Turn up the volume to full. Measure between left tap (input) and center. You should get a zero reading. If not the volume pot should be replaced.

4. If any of these tests showed the correct readings, disconnect the tone pot.

5. If the output is still low, bypass the volume pot.

6. If the output is still low, swap the wires coming from the bridge and neck pickups. If the fault is in the pickup the output will be low when you put the switch into the "bridge" position. If the fault is in the wiring, the bridge pickup will now have low output. In that case check whether the wire from the volume pot's output to the switch measures zero on the multimeter. If it does not, it's most likely that the wire came unsoldered or a cold solder joint. If it does and you still have low output, then the switch should be replaced.

Also, I switched the Slowhands in my G&L Legacy for Trilogies in middle and neck, and now the bridge Crawler is out of phase with the middle, plus the singles sound really dark compared to the ones that went out.  What's going on there?

Re. the out-of-phase problem: swap the middle and neck pickups and you should be fine.
Re. the darker sound: the Trilogies are darker than the Slowhands.
