Another pickup height question
« on: December 08, 2005, 07:14:34 PM »
Hi Guys,

I got my mississippi queen neck and warpig bridge installed yesterday into my sg.  I am loving both of them.  The queen was a real big surprise.  It sounds awesome.
I got one question.
My tech installed the warpig as close as possible to the strings, but it seems a lot further away then my stock ones.  He said I could go higher but the magnet from the pig is making the low E impossible to intonate.  I used the strings from BKP. the 10's.  All nickel.
Would another brand or gauge give me more room to get it closer?  I am @ work now, but if I remember correctly. I could fret the last fret and still be able to stick my finger in the space.  The high e side is much closer.
I just want to make sure I have all that piggy output....lol...thanks!!!

I don't understand the relation between pickup height and intonation. :?  :?:

The magnet is pulling the low E a little sharp

Impossible............he's telling you porky pies.A humbucker, any humbucker, doesn't have that kind of power.Strat coils, yes cos the poles are actaully magnetic rod aimed directly at the string but with a Warpig the magnet is underneath the coils and the magnetism goes up through the pole screws.
If you've intonation problems it's coming from somewhere else....could even be a duff string.Crank the Warpig right up, you should be able to get within 3mm of the string quite comfortably.

If you go too high the strings will choke out and you'll hear ghost tones, @ 3mm is a good starting point and should give you plenty of power.

thanks,

I will give it a try.  Should i still keep the height on the unwound side higher than the wound string side or should i level it out.
I did notice a lot of treble and not enough bass, but thought it was just me.

Experiment, if it need more juice on the bass side don't be afraid to level it up.

I did it last night.  The treble is like 2.5mm and the bass is like 2.7mm when fretting the last fret.  It sounds so much better.  The bass is actually tighter than I expected which is great.  The cleans are still rich and deep which I love.  And when driven it hits you in the gut.....thanks!

hmmmmm....maybe i need to do some more adjusting.  Mine hits you in the gut, but if yours is a knockout...lol

I know its a dumb question but how do I know if I got overtones?  Is there a certian string or note that I could hit to help me hear it better? Does it sound like I have a delay effect or chorus effect?

Not dumb at all!Listen carefully, the note will not be solid, there will be a slight artificial compression, kinda like a artificial chorus sound, you will here it.Do it backward!Place the poles superclose toi the string, you will for sure hear it,and then lower it back to 2mm.Hear the difference.Ghost notes are'nt  true notes.try it that way!

I will try that tonight.  It is a good idea.  I probably will have to adjust the neck but the neck in easier.
Obviously I bought the warpig for its power, so the closer the better.  thanks!

Just got an Epi LP Gold Top 56 RI.....the neck pup was 15mm below the strings!!!....OK, so unscrewed the adjusters out to max and could only get it to 10mm............removed the strings and took the screws out.......under the pup there is just a foam pad. Now....I mailed Gibson and for the P90s they recommend about 2mm for the bridge and 2-3 for the neck.......so whast the best to get this adjustment......I can use some surgical tube.......are springs and option....

Tim.....whast the usual method for adjsuting height on P90s?

With difficulty!!
Take the p/up out and place some padding underneath to give you something to screw down onto then you should be alright.
