I'm currently building two effects boards.
The first is my main board, consisting of tuner, noise reduction, bass D.I. box, and my effects loop. The effects loop pedals will run in series but be mixed with a dry signal via a Boss LS-2.
The second is a board for front-end effects, which I probably won't use all that much but will be good for certain applications. It will run a wah, then in the loop of a LS-2 the following pedals: compressor, overdrive, several different distortions, fuzz, phaser. The LS-2 will mix that chain of effects with a dry signal and then from there it will go to an envelope filter and a 6-band EQ.
The whole second board will connect to the first board via the loop in the Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor on board #1.

Here is a photo of board #1. Board #2 is in progress (waiting on some pedals). Board #1 is a Pedaltrain JR with a T-Rex Fuel Tank Junior power supply. Board #2 is a Pedaltrain 2 with a T-Rex Fuel Tank Chameleon power supply.
I figure this is the best solution to the 'big board problem'. Most of the time for gigs I can just use the small board; for recording or for bands that use a lot of effects (I'm not in one of those at the moment) I can connect the the second board to the first. Both of them include pedals for both guitar and bass. I figured this was better than building one board for guitar and another for bass, both of which would probably replicate one another to a large extent (tuner etc).
