Darker sounding OD pedals for boosting
« on: September 04, 2015, 02:02:34 AM »
I'm looking to replace an MXR Zack Wylde OD (switch and AC socket are dying) and although I like it enough to consider getting another one, I thought I'd ask around and maybe try something a wee bit different. I also have a BBE Green Screamer (with I hear is a TS808 style pedal), but I feel the ZW is more my thing: feels like it tightens and saturates the amp without cutting quite so much low end. My amp's a Mesa MK V:25. Any suggestions for what to check out? So far, the Fulltone OCD and Way Huge Green Rhino sound interesting. Basically wanting ODs either with a tight, but present natural low end or separate controls to fatten them up without losing attack.

Have a look at the MXR Custom Badass Modified O.D.

It is quite similar to the Green Rhino.

You should add the Xotic BB Preamp to that list; it has a great, usable gain range, and a 2-band EQ.
Another option is one of the Bogner pedals, particularly the Blue. I have the Uberschall, and I think it works great with my Mesa dual rec.

Alternatively, since it sounds like you really like the ZW: why not stack it with a dark sounding boost, like the z.vex SHO?

The MXR looks interesting: being able to switch the mid boost on and off sounds good to me.

The Bogner stuff looks to be a bit on the expensive side for me. I do like the ZW, but it's broken, so I need a replacement anyway. And I haven't tried that many ODs, so I figured I'd see what else is on the go.

I haven't tried either the ZW or the badass, but I think both are Boss SD1-based, so if you know you like the ZW the badass might be a way of getting something in the same ballpark (but with a few more features) without feeling like you're buying the same thing twice.

The T-Rex Michael Angelo Batio overdrive does exactly that - Tubescreamer-style boost, but cuts the low end just a little bit, not too much.

Used Bogner pedals can be had for good (better) pricing compared to new...

I saw an MAB Overdrive in a pawn shop in Sydney for around $200 this July

Here's a video.  Love the wig.

Thanks for the replies guys. I went into Glasgow and tried out a few ODs today: eventually settled on the OCD in the end. Seems to tighten it up just enough, stay full sounding and not have that TS mid hump (seems the last thing a Mark needs is more mids). Here's hoping I still like it after the "it's new and shiny" phase wares off
