N.P.D. ABRAXAS
« on: July 24, 2015, 01:13:28 PM »
Wife came home unexpectedly at lunch time and caught me in an act of vigorous self-indulgence. Not having one off the wrist but wailing away on my PRS Bernie Marsden with it's newly fitted Abraxas set. Great Googly Moogly !! This is another terrific set. When I got my RY set I struggled with them for weeks to get the height right. These pups are instant gratification - no adjustments necessary. The SE245 pups were pretty good but these blow them into the middle of next week.

I'm playing through my Blackstar TVP at home but I've got gigs tonight and tomorrow so I'll get to blast them through my Cornford Roadhouse. Can't wait.

Thanks to all forumites and Ben at BK who helped me make this choice. I'm proud to be able to add another BK set to my signature.

Glad you like them, but -  as many of us when we just installed pickups - you're still in the honeymoonphase, so it would be nice if you give us an update in september.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Abraxas has no honeymoon!  lol!  You know I'm stoked.  I get all hot and bothered whenever someone mentions the Abraxas.

Funny thing about the height - I've also noticed that this pickup seems to deliver the goods within a huge height window.

Post gig report, please!

Got the same best result with the Crawler, not too close to the strings.

Glad you like them Richard.

I must admit I'm tempted to try my Abraxas set in my SG before I sell them. I didn't like them in my PRS CU22, but I never really clicked with that guitar so I think that might be part of the problem.

First gig last night. These pickups are AMAZING. I know it's early days but I think my judgement is pretty sound. I left my amp settings the same as I use for my Firebird with Rebel Yells. I had concerns about whether I would find the bridge too smooth in the top end or too loose in the low end compared to the tight punch of the RY. I needn't have worried. I used the bridge all night completely forgetting I had another pickup on the guitar.

What floored me was that they seem to have a lot of EVERYTHING. A lovely raspy bite in the top end, great mids and a nice chunk in the lows. It's fairly close to the RY in the mids but the lows and highs are quite different. With a hefty dose of gain the RY top end smooths out into a fluid, singing more modern voice. The Abraxas retains it's bite and aggression. The low end works better for me through my Cornford than the RY. I have to turn my amp up louder for the RYs low end to get where I like it. The RY low end is much happier going through a 4 x 12 but the Abraxas low end through my 1 x 12 open backed combo is just perfect. The Abraxas sounds so FULL - I felt like I was going though a Marshall stack.

I've played the neck pup a lot at home through my Blackstar and it is very different to the RY neck. Like the Abraxas bridge it is a lot more vintage in tone. I'm going to make sure I give the neck pup a work out at tonight's gig. I haven't been able to stop smiling today and I'm really looking forward to tonight - it's a much bigger room with a large stage so I'll be able to get a lot further away from my amp. Absolutely chuffed to bits.

Craig, you MUST give them a try in your SG. These pups feel like they're made for Gibsons.

Cheers, Richie.

If I were a rich man, I'd buy a boat load of Abraxas pickups and would drop them by the case across the world, like old WWII-era propaganda leaflets.  The world would be a better place.

I'm now thinking of re-trying the Abraxas in my new LP and put the Mules in my R8
