Big fat full sounding strat pickups?
« on: February 02, 2016, 02:05:16 AM »
So i'm in search of some big fat bluesy sounding single coil strat pickups that clean up nice and can get all Hendrix and are also very articulate and smooth and don't sound harsh or shrill if you throw some gain at them, low output wise I hear a lot of good things about 'Fender custom shop 69's' (although not sure the bridge pup would be what I want) High output wise the 'Bare Knuckle trilogy suite' seems pretty solid, Bare knuckle pickups haven't let me down yet but what would you guys suggest?

At the moment in the guitar I have got an HSS set up consisting of the stock fender american standard alnico v in the neck and middle which don't sound bad but are just not full and fat enough for me, in the bridge there is a JB which I don't like in there really, its to compressed and and not what I like in a humbucker (In my Pauls I go for Mules or Duncan 59s) but I thought I would give that pickup combo a try.

So SSS with an even fuller sounding bridge pup or a good HSS combo that will get me the sound i'm after.

(The guitar is a 2009 Fender American standard, alder body and a rosewood fingerboard.)

What immediately struck my mind when I read "So i'm in search of some big fat bluesy sounding single coil strat pickups" was the Bare Knuckle Slow Hands. Although I have never tried them they are practically made for this, after what I have read. Thinking about giving them a go myself

I have a Crawler and Irish Tours in a swampash/ebony board strat. I can nail those tones.
But, I think you want something like:

Abraxas in the bridge (less compressed, more chime than a Crawler) with Slowhands in the middle- and neckposition. Slowhands have quite some extra mids compared to IT's. I think this set will get you there.
Or you order a Slowhand-bridge with a baseplate.  It won't be like an Abraxas, but still a muscular single coil without sacrificing the vintagevibe which you need for Hendrix. Actually for Hendrix a Pat Pend 63 Veneer Board would be the right pick, but I assume you want to avoid that vintage glassiness and woodiness.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I can't disagree with anything said so far. For HSS the Abraxas/Slowhand set would be ideal and a straight set of Slowhands for an SSS configuration.
