New pedal: Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb
« on: June 01, 2016, 04:13:20 PM »
I recently traded my Way Huge Swollen Pickle Mk II for a Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb.  So I now have two reverb pedalsinm my effects loop (my Peavey 6534+ has no onboard reverb), using the EQD Ghost Echo for the reverb on the base tone and this Boss unit for additional reverb on leads.  Does anyone have any hints on using this?  I found the plate, hall, and modulate settings to be quite good.  You can also boost the level so as to use it as a boost when you kick in this pedal.

This was part of a general reorganization of my board.  I have really stripped back the front end pedals to just a few, and moved the phaser into the effects loop, where together with the flanger and chorus it has been put in the loop of a Boss LS-2 in mix mode to add dry signal and tone down those effects (especially necessary now that the phaser is after gain).

GUITAR --> COMPRESSOR --> TUNER --> CLEAN BOOST --> AMP INPUT

EFFECTS LOOP SEND --> 6-BAND EQ --> 10-BAND EQ --> NOISE SUPPRESSOR --> LINE SELECTOR (SEND) --> PHASER --> FLANGER --> CHORUS --> INE SELECTOR (RETURN) --> DELAY --> EQD REVERB --> BOSS REVERB --> EFFECTS LOOP RETURN

Interesting setup, looks like you've put a bit of thought into it.  Just wondering, why the two EQ's?

Thanks.

The 6-band is there for two reasons:

1. It provides a convenient place to start my effects loop on that end of my board!
2. I can use it to reshape my tone for specific passages.

The 10-band, like the Ghost Echo, is there as part of my basic tone.  The Boss RV-5 and Carbon Copy are a bit like the 6-band, in that they would only be used for specific effects.  The same goes for the stuff in the loop of the LS-2 (i.e., flanger, phaser, chorus).

The boost / linedriver is another always-on pedal.  I set it around 9 o'clock and leave the pre-gain on my lead channel at 11 o'clock.  I find that any more pre-gain than that makes things mushy in the pre-amp section, so loading more gain into V1 via the boost is a better option for applications like this where I need more gain.

The ISP Technologies Decimator G-String II is always on. My lead channel is very fizzy without it

That pedalboard looks ace. I was wondering about two eq-units two, but everyone finds his tones in a different way.

I love reverb-one of my favourite effects and it is cool to have more than one type. I also have used two EQ's in the past. I found that they drive an amp nicely if you set them just right-good for boosting solos.

I've recently added a couple more pedals to my board, learned how to use the compressor for sustain, and moved the Boss RV-5 to the position of last pedal before the amp.  Adding a Boss RC-1 Loop Station and a Boss PS-6 Harmonist meant that the MXR EVH Flanger was bumped off my board.  The signal path is also quite different now.

FRONT END:
guitar -> tuner -> decimator g-string -> boost -> Boss reverb -> amp

EFFECTS LOOP:
volume pedal -> wah pedal -> 6-band EQ -> 10-band EQ -> compressor -> decimator g-string -> line selector -> phaser -> pitch-shifter -> chorus -> delay -> line selector -> EQD reverb -> looper -> amp

The placement of the wah and compressor in the effects loop and reverb before the amp and at the end of the effects loop helps in the shoegaze department.

The 6-band EQ is there in case I want a different tone for lead work.  The 10-band is for the base tone

This is what happens when  you get rid of the other guitarist ... lucky there's only me and the bassist out front of stage ... the vocalist can get into the crowd if he needs to!

Wow, that is a really complex setup; I'm impressed. :)

How do you like the BOSS Line Selector? I was thinking about getting an Xotic X-Blend, but the BOSS looks more versatile.

It's really not that complex, the LS-2 helps a lot.  With the  phaser, pitch-shifter, chorus, and delay in the loop of the LS-2 I can turn all of those effects on or off with one tap.

Remembering the reverbs (whether one or both should be on or off) and the compressor is probably more the issue.  I still have to experiment some more with the RV-5 in the dual reverb shoegaze mode.  I might try out the reverse setting

Interesting that you can use it as a boost as well, what settings do you have to use for that to work? Wondering if my dd7 can be set to do something similar? I like a bit of delay or reverb on leads, would rather just press one pedal for my leads!

Well it has a level control that is basically a cut or boost relative to the unaffected signal

It doesn't have EQ.  Just a level
