Pickups for my LP?
« on: April 08, 2006, 04:45:13 PM »
Hey everyone, I was just playing my LP and realized that I need new pups. I have a Peavey 6505+ so obviously I play hard rock/ metal, but that doesnt mean the pups should suck at cleans.

I dont like EMG's cause every guitar with them sounds the same. A few I have been checking out are:

*) Bareknuckle Warpig bridge + Nailbomb neck, or warpig set, or nailbomb set (friggin expensive!)

1) Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates (in neck position)

2) DiMarzio DP165/DP166 Breed Pickup (in bridge position)

3) PRS Tremonti Treble + Bass set

4) Seymour Duncan JB bridge + 59 neck

Some guitarists' tones I like are: Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge), Matt Bellamy (Muse), Tom Morello (RATM, Audioslave), Mikael Ackerfeld (Opeth), SOAD's newest cd's tone (except I hate the songs... haha).

The guitar is (I think) all mahagony with an ebony neck, and the pups in there now are just weak. Itd be nice to have nice distortion (palm mutes, harmonics, low mids, lows, highs) because my amp is a Peavey 6505+ (5150 reissue), so thats what Im going for.

Thanks for the help.

P.S. Heres A pic of my guitar + amp:

I'm thinkin nailbombs might be the best outta what you've asked.. Might be too bassy in an LP though, I've only heard them in Ibanez... I have Mules in my LP and I can get metal tones whilst using them, but I dont know if they are voiced to suit what you want which seems more modern. Miracle Man or Cold Sweat seem quite good, maybe look at those?

I'd suggest either a Miracle Man set or Cold Sweat set, both feature ceramic bridges for great tight bass response and alnico V necks for lovely clean tones.

Tim recommended Cold Sweats for my Les Paul Custom and he was dead on, they are awesome put through my Engl.
Loadsa sustain and clarity, plenty of bite, great harmonics and warmth I love them, so much my other guitars don't get a look in.
Maybe gonna go for some Rebel Yell's in my Standard just for a change but the Cold Sweats are amazing, evryone comments on my tone when I play the Custon live.

Engl Powerball (Mk1) with an Engl 4x12, the best set up I have ever owned.
