Neck pickup to go with aftermath?
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:22:01 PM »
So, I've had aftermath bridge for like 2 days now (in a les paul), and I love it. Now I'm searching for a neck pickup - I've never really liked les paul neck pickup; it's too boomy and muffled IMO.

I'm searching for something that would do nice cleans (not too boomy,  maybe a little thinner) and would have better articulation for leads, which the curent pickup lacks. Also, I've noticed that I have a little more output coming from the bridge than the neck now, so maybe not exatly 7kOhm pickup (the one in my les paul is 7.75kOhms and my aftermath is 14.6kOhms).

I don't really use middle position that much, but clean, it's not far off from just bridge pickup since aftermath is higher output than the neck ;).

Maybe a ceramic neck pickup? Aftermath neck?

The only ceramic neck pickup in the BKP range is the Painkiller.

The Aftermath neck is a fairly dark pickup but has a good rep.  There are reviews of it in the reviews sticky thread I believe

I would also give some thought to the Juggernaut neck pickup.  Apparently it  is a beefed up VHII neck.

If you want a brighter pickup consider the Nailbomb neck

Hmmm... clips of aftermath also soun prety dark in the neck. Coldsweat is recommended  in the review. Any other ones to consider?

Will check out nailbomb, but juggernaut is a bit on a fat side.

Aftermath neck is indeed dark and round sounding, I found it sounding better further away from the strings.

If you looking for thinner tone, I wouldn`t recommend AM neck then, you`ll be safer even with CS neck. Although I have both in totally different guitars (CS in mahogany Dean Cadillac and AM in Ibanez copy alder super strat) CS sounds dark as well but is much clearer and with more articulation and bite.

The Nailbomb neck with a lot of gain in a warm / dark guitar is excellent for leads (it's also very good clean - it's got a unique hollowness to its tone that I really like).

What about juggernaut neck? I want something that does both clean and fluid leads.

Cold Sweat neck is a bit brighter, clearer and with more cut than Juggernaut one.

Nailbomb neck migh work as well, but for some reason it`s not a popular choice as well as there`s not much information around here how it performs with leads ect

I have both Cold Sweat neck and Aftermath neck. Cold Sweat is amazing pickup, I have one in similar guitar to yours, but in big and thick lump of mahogany it might be a bit bassy, little boomy and dark anyway. Just remember there`s loads of PAF vibe going on in CS neck, it`s not super modern shredder neck pickup. But I still prefer it  over Aftermath neck anyway.
