Humbucker + P90 Combination for Progressive Metal?
« on: July 25, 2017, 10:43:50 PM »
Hi all,

I've been lusting after BKPs for around a decade at this point, and I'm thinking of finally pulling the trigger on a set.

My main guitar is a Fender Blacktop Telecaster (2 humbuckers, Maple fretboard, Alder body), which I play through an Engl Screamer. While I play a lot of different styles with a few different groups, my main project is a Progressive Rock/Metal group. Our music includes jazzy clean sections and downtuned heavy riffs.

For a bridge pickup, I'm fairly certain I want the Nailbomb (Though I'm not too sure about Ceramic/Alnico). I want the pickup to have enough clarity to not have extended chord voicings on high gain settings turn to mush, but still be pretty hot for heavy riffing. I'm open to other suggestions, though.

For my neck pickup, I want to have something a bit different. I've always loved the sound of a single coil in the neck for lead playing and cleans. I just love the way a single coil can cut through a mix. So recently I was struck with the idea of a Humbucker-sized P90. Out of the sound samples I've listened to on the website, it seems either the Supermassive or Stockholm could be good fits for me.

Thanks in advance for your valued advice!

Maybe too shrill pickup the NB for your setup, be careful with that.
