Rebel Yell in Les Paul Tribute
« on: August 14, 2017, 03:44:00 PM »
A few days ago I sent a request to join the forum so I could ask about pickup recommendations for a 2016 Les Paul 60s Tribute with P90s.  A lot can change in 3 days though.  I played with the guitar for a week and decided I'm definitely a humbucker guy and even though I wanted something different it was too different.  I was well under the 45 day return window, so I took it back and swapped it for a 2017 Tribute with humbuckers.  Much better and closer to what I'm looking for.

I have BKPs in three other guitars and have had Nailbombs in a LP type guitar.  (It was nice, but the guitar wasn't really a keeper.  Pickups were the high point.)  I range from Emeralds in a Brian Moore, to Holy Divers with Irish Tour middle in a Warmoth Strat, to an all-out demon of in an old Ibanez Randy Rhoads type V that has Warpigs and is tuned to Drop C.  I really like the overall clarity you get from BKP.  Even with the Warpigs there is nice definition.

Now with this new Les Paul, I probably could have been OK with a 490R and 498T combo, but this came with a 490T in the bridge and it's quite a bit lower output than I generally like.  Was considering just swapping the bridge pickup and spent some time listening to clips and YouTube vids to get an idea of how a few of the BKPs sound.  I also compared a couple of my own guitars a bit, even though they tend to be Strat type guitars.  I was pretty settled on the Rebel Yell.  Seemed about the right level of gain and tonal balance for this guitar.  I was debating on a whether to get a set or just the bridge, and whether to go uncovered, or with the Ray Gun covers.  Then I found a set of nickel covered Rebel Yell's with the Ray Gun used in Like New condition and decided to place the order.  I have a feeling they will be a good fit for this one, but you never know until you get them into the guitar.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and kind of join in on the discussion.  I'm an old rocker who started playing around the time Van Halen came onto the scene, so that was an influence, although I've always leaned toward the harder and heavier sounds, going through a big Metallica phase in the 80s and then Pantera, etc.  I'm still influenced by the 80s tones, but I also like bands like Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, and several of the fairly heavy bands.  My own playing tends to be a bit more commercial and melodic, but definitely with some heavy tone to it.

I play through a Mesa Triple Crown TC50 with a Fractal FX8.  I have a couple of 1x12s and a 2x12 Port City, and found an extremely light weight DV Mark Neoclassic 4x12 that should arrive by next weekend.  If I like it, I'll have a 4x12 that is a lot easier for an old guy like me to move around.  If not, 45-day returns will come into effect. :)

Hopefully the RYs work out for you.  They tend to work well in darker, heavier Les Pauls and Explorers.

Welcome!
And not to derail the thread, but what do you think of the Port City cab?
I've been wanting to grab one of their OS Vertical 212's for a while.

I like that Port City cab a lot.  Mine has WGS Veteran 30 and ET65 and it sounds great to me.  I also have a 1x12 O/S with a Scumback J75 that I like as well, but the 2x12 has a deeper tone of course.  If you want a 2x12 that sounds full and deep without getting muddy or woofy I think it fits the bill.

I played my amp a while back though through my buddy's EVH 4x12 and I more or less decided I want to get a 4x12.  It just has a depth and overall clarity to it that I don't think you'll get with any 2x12.  Unfortunately I don't really want to move around a 95 lb 4x12, so I started hearing about Neodymium speaker magnets and lightweight cabs.

Recently I put a Celestion Century Vintage in my Suhr 1x12 to test it and liked the overall character as well as the weight reduction.  I was considering having a Mather 4x12 built with either 4 of those or 2 of those and 2 Neo Creambacks.  Then I heard about the DV Mark Neoclassic, and figured that one is even lighter and will handle a lot of power (in theory).  (600 watts in mono at 8Ohms, or you can run stereo with 300 watts at 16 Ohm.)  And it only weighs about 49 lbs!  (Might not mean much to some of you younger guys, but I'm an older rocker that still likes the big, brutal tones, so lighter cabs mean a lot to me.)  I've read some good reviews of this cab, and if the speakers are even in the ballpark of what that Century Vintage does, I think I'll keep it.  I bought it from a place that has a decent return policy, so I'd just need to throw it in the car and drive up over the hill to the nearest brick and mortar location and drop it off if it doesn't live up to my standards.

Not sure if I'll keep the 2x12 if the 4x12 beats it out, even as nice as it is.  I mean, if I have a 4x12 that is about 10 lbs lighter and actually sounds good, there isn't a lot of point in keeping the 2x12, as I'd probably use the 4x12 then, and have a couple of options for a smaller cab if I just want to go for a quick jam without bringing a lot of big gear.

My Rebel Yells are in a an all mahogany Gibson Firebird Studio. They replaced the 490/498 set (which I hated) on Tim's recommendation. I've been gigging them regularly for five years. They are terrific rock pickups. More modern sounding than my Abraxas set, super responsive - the notes just fly off the fretboard. I love 'em and hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
