Neck pick ups?
« on: January 17, 2018, 03:46:58 AM »
I have a Gibson SG standard and i find I only really use the neck pickup. I was thinking about swapping out the bridge pickup with another neck pickup (just for a little more variety)? Anyone with any experience with this? Ive got a cold sweat neck right now and a Gibson 500t in the bridge.

You can do that but any pickup you put in the bridge position will sound like a bridge pickup. This is due to the fact that string movements are different near the bridge than they are near the neck.

If you use the neck mainly because that is your playing style then I would not worry too much about the bridge pickup. However, if you use the neck pickup also because you don't like the way your bridge pickup sounds then you should think long and hard about what exactly you don't like about your bridge pickup and what you want more/less of.

Well i know what I don't like about my current/stock bridge. Honestly to me i find at a higher volume it sounds really dull/bassy and lacks a certain sharpness i like. I find it sort of muddys the distortion up too much. When coil splitting its not terrible but of course comes with a bit of hum which I'm not too cool with. I guess my next question is what would be a good matching bridge for the cold sweat neck? something crisp?

Cold Sweat bridge or Rebel Yell bridge would both be brighter than the stock pickup and would still balance well with the neck pickup in output.
