Pickup for a Metal Telecaster
« on: December 29, 2018, 01:42:21 PM »
Hello!

I am about to change the Humbucker bridge pickup in my custom built Telecaster and I hope someone can push me in the right direction !

Telecaster. Mahogany body and maple neck, not neck through!

I play Metal rhythm guitars for the most part and very little soloing in standard E or drop D tuning.
I only have a bridge pickup in this guitar so it is a riff machine .
I like tight metal guitars like in Metallica or Megadeth but I also play some melodic Death metal and symphonic metal.
I dont like too much of high screaming frequences.
I like super tight riffing sound. And I like to have as little distortion as possible as long as it sounds aggressive, heavy and tight so it will work good in the mix when I am making symphonic metal with lots of strings ensembles and other orchestral instruments.

I have watched a lot of comparison videos on youtube but it is still hard to choose the right one  :undecided:.
After watching some youtube videos I think I liked Juggernaut and Ceramic War pig the most but I have seen many people saying that Bare knuckle pickups are sensitive of which guitar you put them on and some pickups work best in down tune and so on.
I play everything in E or drop D.

I hope someone can help me!

Aggressive, tight and clean in mahogany sounds like a Black Dog to me - have a read through other threads about the Black Dog on this forum for more info. It's hot vintage, but by all accounts it's super tight and aggressive for metal.

You describe the Aftermath.

I first wanted to have the Aftermath pickup but didn't like the sound of the highs on that one.

Juggernaut has a tamed topend. It might be the right pickup for you.

Okey great! That was what I heard when I listened to loads of demos and Im glad that you say the same so I hopefully choose the right pickup.

Let us know what the result is. Choosing pickups is not easy. Some work great in certain guitars, others don't, although the specs might say it's perfect for that combination of timbers.

Juggs have a smooth top end.  They sound balanced and articulate in bright guitars, with a lot of weight in the mids.
