Good point... I'm definitely into metal, and a pickup set that can handle that well is definitely the preference.
Specifically, I like a throaty powerful bridge humbucker. The guitar will be tuned CGCFAD, so the pickup should also be adept at handling lower tunings. I almost never play clean on the bridge humbucker, so that doesn't need to be considered, but I love a low gain split sound combined with the split neck humbucker. For the neck, honestly, I prefer a single coil (without the noise). Something glassy and articulate with lots of dynamics. Ideally such a neck humbucker would pair nicely with the beast in the bridge; i.e., no major volume drop from bridge to neck.
Finally, the plan is to have a 5-way super switch, so split coil sounds are key, too.
