pickup dilemma
« on: August 22, 2022, 11:09:29 AM »
Hi guys, BK newbie from Belgium here. I need your wise advice :-)

I'm super happy with the sound and dynamics response of my brandnew BK The Mule bridge humbucker.
Am also happy with the (stock) Gibson 490R that is in the neck. Both great sounding pickups.

But!!! They don't really fit together.
When I set my amp to sound perfect with the bridge pup, the neck pup sounds too muddy.
And vice versa: when I adjust the amp on the neck pickup, the Mule sounds too thin and has no low end.

Dilemma: what would be the best solution now?
Also upgrade the 490R to a Mule neck?
Or upgrade the bridge pickup to something with the same sound but more bass, eg. an Abraxas??

Any advice is highly appreciated!
(Background info: I play mostly classic rock, krautrock, 70's stuff, Joy Division, semi-clean stuff and some 80's hard rock)

Depends on your guitar, and what you like about each pickup.. *but if it's mainly a bridge/neck balance issue.. the Abraxas will keep up with any vintage style neck pickup.

I'd choose which pickup I love most in THAT guitar and make the change to the other.

The Abraxas bridge will add a lot of body to the bridge for sure while keeping a 'vintage' voice. Great pickup for boosting thinner bridges like SG's.

If you're trying to keep things pretty low wind & vintage.. I'd go for a mule neck (or maybe a stormy monday/alnico 2 in the neck.)

Maybe other makers if you want to keep that Gibby in the neck.. like a Duncan Custom Custom (Alnico 2 with added body) for the bridge.

Good luck!

Makes 100% sense. So I have ordered a Mule neck pickup!!
