Tomorow I order...last minute change?
« on: May 21, 2006, 11:06:03 PM »
so tommorow ..or..the next 2 days, I will be ordering my pickups. I have decided a warpig for bridge, BUT what for the neck? I have a gibson lp standard (mahogony body, maple top, rosewood fingerboard) my only concern is how the cleans will sound. I like the cleans of the burst bucker pro's that are in there, should I just get to pigs and go 4 wire so I can tap them, or go for a mule in the neck like the fellow with that increadible looking explorer? decisions decisions, its also cherry burst so I know I cant pass the camo or distressed covers off...guess I'll have to go with nickle *sigh* so plain :P zebra and reverse zebra would be cool, but..open poled pig might not sound as tight  any input would be greatly appreciated, but this forum is so friendly and helpful I needn't even say so!

I'd go with a mule in the neck for sure - in a Les paul nothing can be sweeter. Having open-poled pickups won't lose any tightness. if anything i would have thought it'd make them very marginally tigher
LOVING the Mules!

First off, I'm certain you won't loose any tightness with uncovered pups, so don't worry about that.

Coil-tapping a 'Pig would probably get you a sweet clean sound (it's quite good untapped after all), but it won't be a humbucker sound, so I guess you'll need to ask yourself how important a great clean humbucker sound is to you.

A mule in the neck will most certainly give you that sweet clean vintage sound, but it's also a good alrounder though, it's not some weak one-trick pony.

I can't comment on the Cold Sweat from personal experience just yet, but I did order one for the neck position for my other explorer this weekend (along with a Miracle Man bridge 'pup) after Tim recommended it to me:

"The CS neck is very versatile, great for articulate shred but also warm enough for blues/rock and lovely cleans."

Whether you go for calibrated 'Pigs, a Mule or the CS, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Think through what you really need from that neck position and as always, ask Tim if you're still unsure, no one knows better then him what the 'pups are capable off and suitable for.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment on the guitar.

I have raw nickel covered Warpig and MQ in my explorer (also all mahogany). I think they look great - they also sound excellent.  Rather than coil-tapping the Warpic, I put a push pull series parallel switch in place of the tone pot.  The parallel sound is excellent and gives some really nice clean tones (and of course is still hum cancelling).  The MQ gives really sweet lead tones and is very quiet for a single coil.
So many pickups, so little time
