title says it all! whats the difference aswell? to a passive one

A passive pickup creates tone by a small electrical current induced by the movement of strings affecting the magnetic field of the pickup. An active pickup contains pre amp circuitry , driven by an onboard power supply.  I am sure others can elaborate/correct me.

Different active pickups use different systems, but they're generally a passive pickup boosted with some sort of preamp.

EMGs for instance use a low output pickup that's boosted by a built in preamp.

The important thing about them is their sound.  If you like it, all their advantages are like icing on a cake.  If you don't like it, you really won't give a sh*t about any of the advantages.
