Pacifica - Stagger / Flat...?
« on: May 30, 2006, 06:22:16 PM »
Hi all,

I have a Yamaha Pacifica 112 and I plan to replace the 2 single coils with either Apaches or Sultans (I can't decide which yet). Anyway, the fretboard radius of the Pacifica is apparently 13.75" and from what I have read in here that means I should get flat profile pickups. However, the stock pickups are slightly staggered. Has anyone in here replaced pickups on a Pacifica with BKPs? If so, should I be going flat or staggered?

Thank you

Pt

I have a Pacifica, must be an older model 'cos the pickups aren't staggered at all.......and the balance is fine! Although I suppose the radius might be different as well.
Anyway, 13.75's pretty flat, so I'd definately go for a flat profile.

Ye...my Maverick gutiar has a very flat profile fingerboard and came with a modern stager single coil...Yoiu could either used flat or modern stagger...I assume both would be fine...Flat may be better considering your radius tho?

The pickup stagger came from the way stings were made back in the day, not due to fingerboard radius.

I think staggered pups look cooler. Both will work with your guitar.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I thought the stagger was to compensate for the radius and keep the sound balanced between the strings but either way it seems that flat profile will be fine.

Cheers

my pacifica's not staggered either - be sure to tell me what it's like with the BKPs... I might be interested in upgrading it too :)

Will do, it may take a while for me to pluck up the courage to get the soldering iron out but when it's all done I'll post some clips.

You could go for a pre-wired H/S/S set?

Too late!  :D  Order placed. I am banking on getting a very cheap second hand humbucker (I won't mention the brand in here:)  ) off a friend to drop into the bridge position. I'd love to buy a full set of BKPs but my wallet says no.

I did actually buy the Pacifica with the intent of it being a project guitar but I've grown quite attached to it and haven't messed with it yet. It's about time I got a soldering iron out and had a go!   :)

Fair enough, if it's cheap i suppose  :P Probably best that you didn't tell us the brand, as we'd all give BKPs that will do their job so much better...
oh and did yu go for the apaches or sultans? :D

On Tim's recommendation I went for Sultans. The humbucker isn't hugely important at the moment as I bought this guitar for its singles, my humbucker guitar is my Les Paul.
