I dont think thats an attenuator, its just like a master volume that you stick in your FX loop but you wont get cranked poweramp distortion, only preamp I think. The thing about the touchy volume knob is good though, I might make something similar for my HRDx as it has super touchy volume controls.

The only real problem I see with it is that if it's a purely passive device, the resistance at the lower volume settings will adversely affect your tone. Plus, in the photo, it has the cheesiest cables EVER plugged into it; I wonder how much this guy actually cares about the tone ... (I'm sure the box works, but at $10, you get what you pay for)

They dont even sound that bad, even though it only cost me like £2 for their short patch cable, I bet I couldnt tell any difference between it and an expensive george l's or something..

_tom_, I'd take that bet. I'd bet that if you rewired your rig with George L's you'd hear a big improvement.
A large part of my day is spent exploring topics like this one. And I get paid to do it, too! :)
I'm not going to argue the point further, but I'm afraid that straight emiprical evidence is against you on this one.

I built a similar device to the 1 in that auction several years ago for use with my Laney LC30II combo and I couldn't even get it to work correctly!(and yes I wired it correctly as it worked when tested with a multimeter).

As far as cables go, I don't use anything super expensive (Monster etc) but I use the best I can sensibly afford because I need the reliability for gigs etc :)
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

haha fair enough TO, I cant ever hear any difference between cables when I plug straight in and change em.. George L's are too expensive anyway for the patch cable kit  :P
