Holy Diver first impressions....
« on: June 17, 2006, 05:36:20 PM »
Just finished assembling my second Warmoth Strat which gave me a chance to hear the new Holy Diver bridge pickup I installed in it :)  Haven't had the chance to play at serious volume yet, but compared to the Miracle Man bridge in my other strat, here are some comments:

In an A/B clean "strum" test the HD has less total output than the MM though not anything like as much as the numbers might suggest; there really isn't much in it between 17.8 (MM) & 16.3 (HD)

However the mids on the HD are more pronounced.  Actually, if anything it might sound a touch thicker than the MM - though that also means less bright.  Palm muted riffs seem "tighter" on the MM & perhaps the MM has a more "balanced" tone to it, but I love the harmonics & mid range grind from the HD.

Tim is right on one point (he said it on the board recently) - the HD eats the Duncan JB for breakfast!  Actually, if you really must compare it to any Duncan pickup then it's like a nicer (smoother) sounding Distortion - though it's doing BKP a disservice to suggest that this is some sort of copy - the HD has a voice all of its own :)

I think I'm going to like the HD.  I'll add a few more comments when I've got the guitar set up totally to my liking & had a chance to really let fly on the lead channel.

At some point soon I'll buy a Nailbomb for my Les Paul.  Maybe I'll post a 3 way comparison then or if the BKP boys don't beat me to it with the new site I'll put up some clips :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Very cool review thanks! So many BKPs so little money.

Is the Holy Diver the only pickup in that guitar? What are the guitar's specs? You just new someone was going to ask.

I went for the Holy Diver/Irish Tour HSS set.

The guitar specs: Korina body, Maple neck w/ebony f/b -  70s style headstock , Wilkinson trem/LSR roller nut/Schaller locking tuners (that combo stays in tune nearly as well as a floyd!), single volume (no tones) & 5 way switch.  FWIW the body is finished in trans green & I got a white pearl pickguard.

The other strat has an Alder body (so I like green  what's wrong with that?), MM bridge, Sultans mid & neck.  The Sultans seem way lower output than the ITs & too low really for the MM bridge, but I was going for that "80s modified" feel :) - FWIW the Sultans have a beautiful clean sound - particularly strummed  :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I agree on the Wilkinson, I have one with Sperzels and a graphite nut and it  stays in tune nicely.

I was saving up for a Crawler with 2 Mother's Milks now with the new Holy Diver. I dunno. LOL

OK, I finally got the house to myself at a reasonable hour so I could try some high gain sounds at proper volume levels   Here are some additional comments:

The Holy Diver has a fantastic thick, full tone for lead work.  Lead runs are really smooth & chords just ring out.  The extra midrange seemed to help me with sustain - long notes morphed into this wonderful musical feedback that I could really control, but it's not at all microphonic - even holding the guitar right up to the amp didn't produce any squealing.

It doesn't have as much "cut" as the Miracle Man - fast palm muted riffs don't jump out at you like they do with the MM which is probably a better pickup for thrash & death metal type playing.  Not that you can't use the HD for those styles, it just sounds a little more "rounded" than the MM for that kind of riffing.

As I stated earlier, it has a little less output than the MM, but it's really not that much.  The MM may have skull-splitting output, but the HD is a pretty beefy pickup too.

Using the HD on the clean channel, you get a really warm tone that's just begging for some chorus & delay - somebody send one of these to Alex Lifeson

The more I play the HD, the more realise:
a) I really like it :)
b) It's nothing like the Duncan JB.  They have about the same level of output, but next to the HD, the JB seems more trebly, a bit thin & harsh.  In fact, my trusty Jackson might be in line for a new pickup too

Couldn't agree more with you about the HD. I have one installed on my Ibanez and the only thing i can say about is, THICK TONE.

I wouldn't quite go that far, but it's probably the best non-locking trem!
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

You could always use audacity which is free to download and better than ms sound recorder? Just an idea.
