BKP-P90 for Stratocasters?
« on: June 28, 2006, 04:28:19 PM »
Hi guys - excuse my ignorance on this but has anyone ever seen a Stratocaster loaded with two P90 soap bars?

Was wondering if it's possible to buy a loaded BKP scratchplate with two P90 soap bars and wiring configured to a three way selector?

Any thoughts?

Many thanks

Sam

P-90's are longer than strat pickups so the body may need some slight modification and the scratchplate may need to be wider to they dont stick out from the edge

Yeah, unless you're body has a "swimming pool" rout (which is horrible), You'll probably need a custom body, in which case you can either get it rear routed or get a custom pickguard. Alternatively you could get an HH strat and put Mississippi Queens in it.

They did one that had 2 soapbars a while back, I don't know if it's still about, but it had a more LP special style scratchplate rather than the usual Fender shindig.

And as said, you could also get a strat with a pair of buckers (or swimming pool rout) which is far more common and get Mississippi Queens which'd be easier.

I have a Crawler/P-90/P-90 HSS set in an original PRS EG.  The original EG has a swimming pool rout, but I didn't need to widen it with soapbar P-90's.  Tim got the scratchplate for me as it was a very unusual guitar and I didn't want to damage the original scratchplate.

With soapbars you need to remember that the height adjustment screws will go into the body, so while the coil is wider than the strat pickup, the overall size is not that different.

I can tell you that the sound is well worth it.  And it looks great too.
So many pickups, so little time

Great - thanks for the responses -

I have a DVD at home with Stuart Bull playing a Strat style guitar and his bridge pickup looks very similar to a soap bar style pickup.

I guess what I would love to put in my Strat project are two fat looking soap bars, so they are kind of like single coils but a little fatter sounding (and looking)

I wonder what Stuart Bull has in his bridge then? Especially if it's just mounted to the pick guard?

Any ideas?

It's BKP all the way for me so I'm kind of hoping to get some soap bar or similar...

Yeah I've seen a strat with a P90 in the bridge, so it can be done. I think it looks pretty cool, must sound great aswell

It may look something like this on our website:

Or look at the whole page:
http://felineguitars.com/on_the_bench/

The pickup is routed and mounted into the body, and the scratchplate has been custom routed to accept it
The pickups dont mount onto a pickguard without modification
Ibanez did it with the Talman- made a brass bar that runs under the P90 so it could be pickguard mounted- but a lot of aggro!

The other option is humbucker sized P90s like the MQ

Looks like a great axe there Feline! I love the Explorer you made for Tim aswell.. I dream of having a custom guitar some day  :P

As for the Explorer near the bottom of the page, I'd probably have it natural like Tims, gloss black is more common.

If you look at the feline above it shows that there is platy of room for a P-90 at the bridge, but you can see that a P-90 at the neck would be very close to the edge of the scratchplate, but thats only really a cosmetic concern it would still work fine

So could Missippi Queens be added to a stratocaster HH pickguard?

Anyone done this?

Thanks
