pickup replacements for gratest versatility
« on: July 07, 2006, 01:34:58 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm new to BK pickups, but they have a flawless reputation on the internet, and im looking for something different from the usual.
btw, this will be a long post.

im looking for the most versatile possible setup out of a 2 humbucker, poplar bodied, 25.5 scale guitar, the ebmm sub1. ill have the guitar wired so i can have several different parallel and series combinations.
my main question is, which pickups sound best in both parallel and series? perhaps coil split also (though i hate to deal wit hum). im mainly looking at the nailbomb or the vh2, listening to clips and such (btw, great clips everybody, there are some fantastic players here). as a reference, im using a pod xt running into the pa, a keyboard amp, or a microcube. will the relatively high output of the nailbomb be overkill as i have no tubes to drive? maybe pickups wont have a very big influence on my sound, as it is basically digital. this is sort of a dilemma, and i would like some opinions on this.

anyway, here are the basic tones i am looking for. i dont want exactly these tones, but rather similar kinds of brushes i can paint with. john petrucci's lead and rythm sound (think when the water breaks), and other thick/creamy neck lead sounds (steve morse, gary moore, some slash, santana...) are the most important. good classic rock tones (everything from old acdc to b.o.c.) and all kinds of 80's rythm and brown sounds are also a priority. two thrash tones (basically saturated metallica and crunchy megadeth), a shred tone (i like marty friedman's in 'forbidden city'), and some pop/mainstream/punk tones are kind of secondary, but would be nice to have. with the parallel modes im shooting for pseudo mark knopfler sounds, dave gilmour leads (comfortably numb pulse version *orgasm*), some srv or derek trucks bluesy sounds, and overall usable cleans. im not quite so picky regarding clean tone  .

I realize that tone is not something i can order up just like that with fries, and this is a lot to ask, but maybe bare knuckle pups will get me that much closer to all the sounds in my head. i will also be constantly fiddling with the amp, cab, mic simulations and eq--i dont expect the pickups to do everything. so is there a something in the BKP line that will give me the meat and bones for these sounds? any help, suggestions, discouragements, testimonials, etc welcome.

thank you very much everybody.
