Advice Please??
« on: September 05, 2006, 05:21:08 PM »
I'm looking for a pickup that will nail Adam Jones tone on 10,000 days.  What should I look at?

My rig is a Vox AC30 slaved behind a Budda SD 45 with a sonic maximizer in the loop and a Tonebone TriMode on the front end.  Along with the various Necessary analog boxes chorus, delay, etc...

Holydiver or Nailbomb...
something with a lower output may do the trick well though.

He's a JB user right ?

I would say Crawler, actually. Especially if you have a PRS/Mesa combo, that combo will get you mighty close!

also agree.

TO, i didn't get the PRS/MESA thing.
Did you you mean that it's your tonal idea of Tool's sound ?
Coz Adam Jones is a LPCustom/Diezel amp user,
but he did used Mesa indeed until the Aenema album i think...

Hmmmm...

My Rig isn't really a very 'High gain' rig though..  I have some really high gain pickups in my sc420 right now.  Q-Tuners actually.  They're really a pretty good pick up...  But I was looking for something with a bit less gain.

I'm planning on buying two more reletively soon.  One will be an RKS Black Sun and the other will be a Ibanez Universe.  I was going to get a set of BKP's for the Black Sun and a set of Q-Tuner 7 strings for the UV.

Here's my only electric currently.

Adam Jones tone is from his Les Paul Silverbursts with Duncan JBs in the bridge. The only really uses the bridge position. He use the wall of sound for amps. He tends to use Diezel, Mesa and Marshall amps. He sets them so he can use his volume knob and picking dynamics to move between clean and dirty without switching channels.

As far as I know he's never really used PRS.

Q-Tuners are fine pickups, I used to have a Hi-Z 'bucker. If only I hadn't sold it... Very precise, detailed sound. If I ever buy a one-HB guitar, I'll either put a Q-Tuner or a BK Rebel Yell in it.

They now have Super hi-z pups, Pups for 7 string and single coil sized pups with a single row of pole pieces at Q-Tuner.com.

We managed to get close to "one" tone right from Ten Thousand Days and that is minute 10:29 from Rosetta Stone using the Rebell Yells on a Les Paul with a Body Rot II pedal as my distortion, the other set of pick ups that are closer to the JB's I read somewhere in the pickups forum is the new Holy Diver. Check the message written by Phil K. I had the JB's once...no more
