New pickups for my Godin Freeway Classic
« on: September 05, 2006, 06:55:07 PM »
Hey forumites, I'm looking to buy a new set of pickups. My guitar is a Godin Freeway Classic. This guitar has an H-S-H config. It's pretty bright sounding, made of silver leaf maple with a maple fretboard.

Originally I was looking at a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck, along with an Alnico II Pro Flat to fit the single coil mid position, however I did some research and discovered BKPs. Having now heard example tracks I have to say the tones do sound amazing and vastly superior to what SD have to offer. I am looking to get good distortion tones out of the bridge, along with a more mellow neck and a mid that balances it out.

I’d like to be able to achieve good classic rock tones, stratty type Trower tones, a nice soft crunch for Led Zeppelin type stuff and also good Gilmour like cleans from the end setup. I know that’s ambitious but I’m not looking to match the tones, just be able to get close to most of them with the one guitar, I will be getting the humbuckers coil tapped to increase versatility.

The Steve Stevens Rebel Yell set along with an Irish Tour to fit the middle slot is one idea. Another alternative I thought of was a Black dog in the neck and a Warpig in the bridge with the Irish Tour mid still.

Any input you guys could give would be appriciated muchly  :D

i'd say RY-IT-RY if it has a trem, as i've heard that RYs work amazing in that situation, but i am curious as to how the Black Dog neck works with a warpig and Irish Tour .... hmmmm.... *ponders*
PRS Starla for sale, see Seconds out section...

Yeah the latter would be an unusual combination, but I'm definitely steering the way of RY-IT-RY, apparently the RYs tap really really well, so I'd be able to get nice single coil sounds from all positions when I want them, I really love the IT sound... Seems most of the tones I want would be achievable in this situation but if anyone has any more tips that'd be cool :)

Oh and it does have a trem in answer to that question, though I don't really use it.

Cold Sweat, Nailbomb 7b, Cold Sweat 7n

With all that maple you might want to try something a bit darker than the Rebel Yells and Irish Tours. Maybe Holy Divers and Slow Hands or Crawlers and Slow Hands would be a better option.

+1 for the above, remember your guitar is already quite bright. Maybe the warpigs would still be good though, the bottom would tighten up and apparently they sound good in parallel so maybe good split too, certainly one coil of a powerful humbucker is going to be that much closer to sounding like a regular single coil.

Yeah, got an email from Tim and he recommended a Slow Hand for the middle, I think the RYs would be still be ok, they arent excessively bright...

I really like the tone so unless it'd really mismatch my guitar I still favour them, would you guys say bpks have a lot of their own tone, ie the same pickup would sound pretty similar in diff guitars?

The other combo he suggested was a nailbomb bridge, tour middle and black dog neck.

Just to update you guys I have ordered a set of Rebel Yells with a Slow Hand in the middle :) I went with Tim's advice, I don't think the existing brightness of my guitar will be overkill as people have said good things about these put in strats which are pretty bright anyway!

Will let you know how I get on with this combo :)

I went with the Rebels with the black cover and ordered a set of chrome pickup rings to create a nice contrast and match the other hardware on my guitar :P

Thay can do single coils with unexposed pole pieces? Cool!

Edit: Just to let you know it'd appear these aren't actually an option due to the way they're made, just got word from Tim.
