Author Topic: How shall I rescue my Warmoth? (Read 3302 times)

Started another Warmoth guitar at the weekend, but as I posted in the Tech forum, I had to drill the mounting holes in the neck & made a pig's ear of it :(

At least I figured out why the bit snapped - when I bought a new one, the packet says max RPM 1600 - at the time I had the drill wound up to 3000 - what a moron :roll:

Anyway, I've done nearly everything else (wired the BKPs etc) so now it's decision time. Should I:

a) Have another go with the hand drill :shudder:
b) Find someone who has a drill press & ask nicely to use it.
c) Phone round & try to find a professional to do it

Not sure whether I'm keen to experiment with this one as the neck & body are beautiful - it could be a wonderful instrument...

ok - if the drill bit is broken off and still in the neck , then it will need to be dug out and extracted.
Usually this will result in needing the hole to be dowelled with a maple or hardwood plug- thankfully this will be hidden by the neck being in the neck pocket on the body.

We tend to always use the pillar/bench drill for this kind of drilling job - for stability as much as anything, but we are lucky to have all that kind of equipment to hand

The drill bit isn't still in the neck, it all came out.

It's just a very ragged grubby looking hole :(

Since you've already got one oversized hole, you could get one of these Vintique neck kits to attach the neck with machine screws into threaded bushings:

Would definitely need professional installation though, I suspect!

I always thought it was a neat idea - you could detach the neck whenever you liked (without wearing out the screw holes) and take your guitar in a suitcase. :)

Ok - that makes it easier to fix as we dont have to dig out the old bit
I reckon that we can dowel the hole with a smaller dowel than other wise and drill the other holes just fine as well as redrilling the hole that went wrong

All done!
