what do you guys use to record clips?

Well I have the Line 6 guitarport and although its straightforward, I think it sounds a bit cr@p.  Also the drum loops are shitee and as I have lost my manual with the key on it, I can't download any.

What software could I download/ rip for free to be able to make some half decent recordings through the guitarport with that has some good drum effects.

Id preferably not want to spend any money, but If I like the sound of something then I might buy it.

I'm not sure I can help exactly but...
I use Garageband on my Mac, I've got Cubase Le but it doesn't seem to come with any drum loops (Please correct me if anyone uses this!) and I haven't been able to set it up correctly (an ongoing issue!)
Garageband has some ok drum loops, and I've got others from free cds and you can download some (try free drum loops in google). The thing to bear in mind is that lower end software often cant time stretch mp3 or wav files very well so midi files may be more useful (but you'll end up with the cheesy drum sounds of your software).
I prefer to find a good groove from the loops I have and use that at the tempo I want , get a good tune down and recorded and hope that someday I can get some better drums to replace the originals.
In other words, don't let the drums stop your guitar playing, that should come first. After that you can get BFD or Drums From Hell to beef out your sound.

Cannot record right now (as kinda split between two countries (Texas USA and here in UK) but bought a M-Audio Black Box exactly for the simplicity.
The thing is ultra simple (program comes with is way simple to use too, easiest press space bar to record then stop lol). After updating to ver.2 (free HUGE upgrade) the thing sounds amazing too (esp. Bogner, Soldano, Diezel and Marshall sims IMO). It is still onsale over here for £99.00 so damn cheap too.
Alternatively Boss is coming out (anyday,or may be out already) with a small all encompassed unit with card memory and usb interface. It is called a BOSS Micro-BR and looks very interesting for small,portable,easy recording. Can also hold mp3's to track to and slow down for licks etc.

I found with guitarport, you always have to have a stomp box, and the additional EQ on to get good sounds.

I record with it through audacity and use a little drum machine called rhythm rascal.  The problem with that is, the output (.wav) you get from RR is it has these clicks added in because it is shareware.....Its annoying but ok for recording for myself.

Acid Music has a free version and it looks simple enough.  I haven't used it myself, because I have a Mac, too, and they come with Garageband already installed.

I know you have no money, but it's a very good idea to get some cos there's some amazing recording software out there. Logic is a great software package, but I personally find that computer's are too complex, as there's too many ways that you can manipulate the sounds. I use a Roland VS-2000 DAW as it's just like an analog setup, with real faders. You only get so many effects and then you run out (this stops me messing on an effects patch for 5 hours, when I could have been practicing my guitar licks) It's a 20 track all in one recorder.
