Which one do you prefer?

Could you please tell me which clip do you prefer, and why?

Clip 1

Clip 2

I took an older recording of mine and experimented with the TWO (!!!) FX insert slots Cubase LE has. I ended up with a compressor and some extra reverb.

The second clip has some compression and a touch (5%) of reverb to smooth out the mids and the highs and add some space to the sound. It doesn't sound as in-your-face as the first one, though. The first clip features the sampler's own reverb only and no compression.

Clip 2 sounded much more 'natural' to my ears. It sounded more three dimensional and more as if it was played on actual orchestral instruments.

Clip 1 sounded very synthetic, stark and as result the tempo and thematic development seemed more leaden.

As a result, clip 1 had me waiting for it to end, but clip 2 really pulled me in and made me want to listen.

Amazing what production changes can make eh ?

Good work though Peter !

Regards,

Derek
