Hooray, i have bought a pickup
« on: November 10, 2006, 09:28:02 PM »
My mate has sold me his pickup as he no longer had any use for it, so now i'm the proud owner of a mule!

Exactly what i was after for the bridge, i had a brief talk with tim at music live and he suggested either a calibrated set of stormy mondays or a SM for the neck and a mule for the bridge.

So of i go to order a SM for the neck, untill disaster strikes... My mate mentions how great the mississippi queens are!

now i have to decide if i want a MQ or a SM....

so out of the two, which would be better for nice laid back blues tones (my favorate players are muddy waters, peter green, buddy guy, albert king amongst others) and its going to be stuck in a gibson flying v.

theres too many choices in life, at least i know which rum to buy when i go into tesco :P

Personally I would say an SM would be a more immediate choice for what you mention.

But from the clips the 90s do one hell of a job too.

I'm going to buy mule bridge and MQ neck for my guitar
but I doubt you have the patience to wait for my clips for 3 months

It's bad enough getting hold of a mule and thinking "well i shouldn't install it untill i get the other pickup too!".

Should really have thought about this sooner :P

Stormy Monday ...

I have tried a set of Mules and a set of Stormy Mondays in my Les Paul - and although I prefer matched sets, I can heartily recommend the SM neck to compliment the Mule bridge.

A Stormy Monday is a bit like a 'Mule Lite' , ideal to breath extra air into the more bassy and resonant neck position. My own SM set now sits in an S.G - which I gather is close to a 'V' in sound. They sound even nicer in the S.G.

Whilst I have not used MQs, (and have no doubt they sound great) - I would rather put a contrasting humbucker in the neck instead of a single coil.

In deciding or ordering, remember the Mule will have an Alnico IV magnet and the SM has by default a weaker Alnico II magnet. For this reason you may want to request one built with an Alnico IV magnet, or to preserve it's intrinsic character, just adjust the neck pu a touch closer to the strings.

Congratulations on discovering BKPs !

Regards,

Derek.

1) it's still in the post at the moment, should have it soon

2) if i install both at the same time its less hassle, as to remove the pickguard i have to remove the bridge. So if i buy myself a new set of strings then i can do the whole lot in one go - easy as that.

I would definately get another humbucker, like an SM for the influences you mentioned but I would even consider another matching Mule for the neck.  Lenny Kravitz has a set of Mules in his Flying V!
BKPS: Cryogenic Apache set, Mule set, Riff Raff, Stormy Monday.

i have a black dog bridge and mississippi queen neck in my LP, and one thing which really shows through is the huge number of different sounds you can get out of it, especially if you have coiltaps/splits because then with the flick of a switch i can get my guitar sounding completely different, but in a good way... still has the growl from the bridge and the sweet p90 tone from the neck :D

have a look through the players section for my neck MQ clips :D
