Oops - got a bit over excited
« on: December 04, 2006, 06:00:32 PM »
I have just ordered my new pickups & thought I'd prepare my guitar (see the pic).

You know how it is though you don't have something & suddenly you need it.  I really fancy playing something a bit heavier & all I have left is my SG - well I suppose if Tony Iommi can play heavy with an SG then I can too. And his only had P90's.

Less of this 'only had P-90's'

If you play with a good set of P-90's you will see why Tony Iommi used them (along with a lot of other great guitar players in the late 60's and early 70's).

I actually put some BK P-90's into my PRS EG to replace the Duncan single coils (and a Crawler to replace the Standard Treble).  Everyone who tries the guitar is knocked out by the sound.  I also have 2 LP Juniors, 1 SG junior, 1 LP Special, a 54 Goldtop Reissue and a  55 Custom Reissue all with P-90's.

Give them a try before you knock them, you will be very surprised.

Stop trying to justify your collection. P-90s suck. PDT_008

I was refering to the heavy slab of wood that is a les paul to the less substantial SG - i think it came out wrong. i have nothing against P90's - if your feeling a bit mellower, i was actually going to get some next for the SG!!

i meant P90's wouldnt be the first choice for playing some of the heaviest riffs of the time.

Sounds like you said the same thing twice. Don't waffle, it looks bad.
Your opinion is wrong about heaviness and P90s, too.

I wasn't getting excited, I was just explaining that for the sound that Tony Iommi wanted, the P-90 worked great (better than the Strat he had originally).  Lots of heavy riffs come from guitars which you wouldn't expect to be used for that sort of sound (Billy Duffy's White Falcon in the Cult, lots of Tele players in the Punk era (and of course Jimmy Page played Tele on early Zeppelin).  Also listen to Alex Harvey and Mountain for more great P-90 tones.

Queens Of The Stone Age,  P-90's and hollow body guitars.

also me, but i'm less famous...

the whole of the next Twilight Odyssey album should be recorded with a Les Paul Junior with a p90!  you already gave in and got a les Paul, it's only a matter of time! 8)

(i won't be expecting a tele and a twin reverb, that would just be silly)

actually, Tony only used the P-90s for a short time on the first album. the pickups you see in his Old Boy SG are P-90 sized humbuckers, custom built for Tony.
