I think i'm going to swap my EL34s for some 6L6's when I get a chance, and some money. I dont really like british sounds, lol. Oh well

Joe

Hi Joe,

Don't get me wrong, as a Fender amp fan, I love the HUGE glassy soundstage and headroom that 6L6s give.

With a 6L6 loaded Laney, I have a warmer  version of the Fender sound, but with a lot more (smooth) gain when I need it.

It's just that I always associate Jensen speakers with 6L6s and V30 or Greenbacks with EL34. (Not that I have ever owned a EL34 type amp ).

I also read on someone else's post that the EL34 output had:

 "more midrange detail".

I was therefore not sure if 6L6s and Greenbacks were 'tonal bedfellows'.

Answers on a postcard please ...  :D

By the way Joe, if you desire the 6L6, I can heartily recommend the 7581a type that I got from Watford valves last year. Even cleaner and tighter sounding than the 6L6 type. The biasing was very close to being the same as standard 6L6 types.

FF.

Awesome, thanks man. I love the cleaner and tighter sound. And it will give a clearer tighter preamp gain  too, as it would be too loud to push the full 100 watts to get any decent power amp breakup in venues smaller than arenas :).

This is my first 3 page post :) sweeet  :oops:

One more thing Joe, if you like clean sounds and detail:

I usually fit at least one 5751 type pre-amp valve in my larger amps to ensure the quintesential Fender/SRV sound. These are a 12AX7 type, but with only about 75% of the gain. They add a lot of detail and articulation to your sound, especially if you put one as the first valve in your pre-amp stage.

I have tried them throughout my Fender 'The Twin' and Laney LH50R, but when used all the way through they 'cool down' the gain channel too much.

Whilst I do not play Stevie Ray Vaughan stuff, I read with interest that he kitted out his Fender amp's pre-amp stages throughout with 5751 types to get that massive clean sound, (even with a tube screamer pushing up the front).

Each one you use tends to bring the overall volume down a bit, but that does not sound like it would be a problem to you.

In the end, (to get the best of both worlds) - I ended up just using the one  5751 at the first input stage of my amps and then nice clean sounding N.O.S 12AX7 types for the rest.

If in doubt about voicing and choices, contact Derek at watfordvalves.com to ensure you get the right combination. They do tend to be the BKP of valves and speakers, as they test a sample of their products in actual amps at full throat as well as the electrical tests.

Hope that helps,

 :D

Cheers FF, i like the sound of the 5751 12Ax7, that would abe awesome. I am also a big watford valves fan, they are ace, very good customer servuice too.

I will just have to seek out my first preamp valve in my VH100R, well, i have a 1 in 6 chance :)

Hey Joe (good idea for a song that ...  :D )

In case you are not kidding me, the first pre-amp valve is usually physically the nearest one to the input jacks. It acts as the buffer for the jack sockets, and begins the job of amplifying their content down the line. The good thing about a 5751 (being the same electrode construction and voltage requirement as a 12AX7) - is that you can put it/them anywhere you have just removed a 12AX7 and see if you like what you hear.

As a general guide, the 12UA7 is lowest gain (i.e just above unity gain) and is usually used as a phase splitter for the reverb and output stages in Fender amps. Next is the 5751 at about 75% gain - and then the usual 12AX7.

Laney amps seem to use 12AX7 types throughout.

They relate to the old Mullard types as follows:

ECC81 = 12UA7

ECC82 = 5751

ECC83 = 12AX7

Enjoy the tone quest Joe !  :D

I sense the devil on my tail Davey ...

Is it the sacrilege of actually 'cooling' a Laney down and playing clean - or has your own arrived yet ?

spill the beans, I'm all ears  :D

I got my first chance to play my VH100 with a full band tonight. I was shocked at how great it cut through everything. I could hear every note, every mistake and the sustain was incredible.

I used my PRS Standard 24 for tonight and i got a great metal tone. Couldn't be happier as I just had my first practice with my new band. Played Hangar 18 and started writing some new stuff. This might just be the band i've been looking for, for a long time. Kinda had a mixture of Megadeth, Death and Iced Earth. Happy time!

I've been playing my GH50L all afternoon, the crunch on this thing is absolutely amazing. If I get a VHII loaded superstrat I think I'll nail the tone on Aint Talkin Bout Love perfectly. I'm almost there with my Mule loaded LP. I'll still get a new speaker for the bottom of my cab. Now just gotta choose between a V30 and G12H!
