Humbucker swap to P90
« on: December 17, 2006, 10:38:37 PM »
I have an SG (it's the Special with the bigger scratch plate & uncovered humbuckers) I want to fit it with P90's, however before i buy them i want to know if anybody knows if the P90's will fit the guitar without too much hassle or if not and its a new scratchplate required where i can get a scratch plate from to fit the holes left by the old one & the P90 pickups?

i hope i'm making sense! cheers!  :D

Have you considered the Mississippi Queens which are real P-90's and will fit your guitar perfectly the way it is now?

I was gonna have that as a back up plan!! :D

I know that pickups are all about the sound but you got to have a bit of show as well & (proper) P90's look cooler!

I think a change of scratchplate and real P-90s would fit, but they might be a bit deeper than a regular humbucker?  Not sure how you could check...

If you get an SG Classic pickguard like this one it'll directly replace the SG Special guard.  And there's a choice of colours too.

I didn't keep my SG Special long enough to get round to changing the pickups, so I'm not sure how big the pickup routs are, but I suspect you'll have to do at least a bit of routing to make room for P-90s.

That looks like it'll do the job! however if the body needs routing then i might just pass on this one and take it to a tech, soldering & general stuff i can do - that though seems a little out of my depth!

You could try WD, but they don't actually list that particular scratchplate on their site (I'm sure they used to).

I've ordered parts from US eBay sellers a million times, though, including the guy who makes those scratchplates.  Never any problems.

(OK, "a million times" is an exaggeration, but lots of times.  :D  )

I have a pair of Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P90's in my SG and they sound heavenly - they fit a standard humbucker rout too with absolutely no modding needed.

well I think after playing my BKP'd Les Paul, I'll stick to BK upgrades - if you know what you like why go elsewhere.

so it's a new scratch plate then!

I own a BKP90 P90 and its phenominal, it makes my guitar sound as rich in tone as an acoustic piano. It sounds good through everything I put it through, especially modulation effects, aka flange, phaze and chorus. Even as a line signal it sounds great, without an amp!

Mississipi Queens have less noise than regular P90's due to the metal cover. :)
