Okay my friends and I are getting my other friend an acoustic guitar (dreadnought stylee) for Christmas - and we're all broke. I have no idea about acoustics and i wouldn't know where to start (i.e. wen i got my first guitar, if you gave me £150 i'd get a squier, whereas now i know i can get a MIJ charvel superstrat for that kind of money - much cooler.) i'd like to know what the superstrat of the acoustic world is, as it were. thanks guys. sorry for my ignorance

Indy, it is not a dreadnought but the Washburn D10 is pretty good-not the greatest on the planet but a great guitar for the money.I bought one when casually looking at more expensive guitars a few years ago and the Washburn was better for the price range-and I hadn't intended buying a guitar that day. They are also apparently the best selling acoustic in the world in that price bracket.I have played many a crafter too and they seem pretty good.Try and get a solid top guitar whatever you do-they take a while to "play in" but it is worth it.

thanks a load 38th - i'll have a looksie at that washburn! Yeah _tom_ reccommended me crafter - i was looking at the D7, any experiences guys?

If you can, check out the Aria AW-75 too. I have the 12 string version and for the money it's very, very good. I played the 6 string version in a shop the other day and it was also great. The 6 string has had very good reviews in the mags.

Totally recommended.

Might sound a bit strange but I'd got to the shop and try them all out in your price bracket - I've found a huge variation in acoustics, even amongst the same model - you might be suprised which brands give you the best sound.

I got a Richwood Jumbo for £99 - it really nice, great 'strummer'.

In my experience of acoustics, which is quite limited it has to be said, Crafter seem the best value.

I've heard some Crafter Acoustics that sound really nice for the £150 range. I'd get a Handmade Acoustic if I could afford it! but I have expensive taste. I own an all original 60s Echo Acoustic guitar and it sounds wonderfull, it cost me £80 from 'The Loot' newspaper, never seen another one apart from mine.

I've got a Yamaha FG700MS, a very nice guitar for the money, especially since it seems to be discontinued and some sites are selling them for around £120. I got mine on ebay, "used" but untouched for £80.

Oh, I forgot to mention...

...I bought an Applause bowl back acoustic for about £100. It's really nice to play and although some people seem to have trouble playing it sitting down, I've not had a problem. The bloke I got it off was more than a little on the fat side, so his belly kept pushing it off his lap. Funny as hell to watch him trying to play it.

I'd definately advise you to try it first though, the sound isn't as full as a propper acoustic, but I still quite like it for thrashing around the front room on.

I have a Yamaha FG403MS - it's a varnish-less hardtop with a lovely playability and a gorgeous bright sound. I highly recommend.
