Noise Supressor required when using overdrive pedal?

Santa and his elves made me a Maxon OD808, and while I am finding some awesome new sounds through my Crate XT65R, this pedal really amplifies the noise generated by the amp. It's pretty bad when I'm just standing there not playing, even with the volume knob down.

Is this normal? Would a noise supressor (Boss NS-2) fix this, or is it a problem with my amp?

It sounds like you have too much gain going on. Trying turning the gain down on the amp and use the pedal for most of the gain. If thats not the problem, a noise surpressor will be the best option.

Sometimes to get the gain level you want, there is a lot of noise along with it. Ain't nothing wrong with that. And there ain't nothing wrong with using a noise suppressor, either, if that gets rid of the problem!

When you put OD in front of an amp, you are going to get noise, since you are magnifying your guitar signal 3x (OD > preamp > poweramp). If you find the hiss unbearable, then yes -- a noise suppressor will help.

A noise suppressor will also help eliminate feedback at high volum levels.

If you want a noise surpressor get a decimator. They are by far the best I have ever heard, absoloutley amazing, they shut up the hiss from a Krank with full distortion but kept the tone almost perfect! AMAZING!

They cut down noise levels hugely and still keep the tone amazingly pure.

Since using George L cables there has been No hum out of my amp, try them, they're well worth it!
