Peavey 6505 combo
« on: January 05, 2007, 09:18:03 PM »
does anyone have any experience with the Peavey 6505 combo?  I've heard it's a gain monster and great for metal.  there are no Peavey dealers anywhere near me.

I'm looking for a good thrash metal combo, but I cannot afford the boutique stuff.

thanks

Annihilator (<--- especially), Testament, Overkill, old Megadeth...the usual suspects.

I have about $1500 USD to spend.

thanks

all those thrash metal bands used JCM800s - get yourself a 2204 or 2203 model head.  if you need more gain then they respond VERY well to tube screamer type pedals (SD-1, TS-9 etc...)

the dual channel JCM800s had more gain (2205, 2210) so you may look into those too (I personally prefer the balls-out sound of the single channel heads myself).

finally, the Silver Jubilee (or Slash) heads are great for this style of music - Anthrax's Scott Ian used these in tandem with single channel JCM800s.

thanks for the replies

I'll be heading to NYC next week and hope to try as many combos as I can.

that Engl Screamer 50 1x12 sounds jaw-dropping, at least from the clips I've heard.

the peavey is probably a little modern-sounding for that stuff, though it's worth a try. the screamer would be worth a try too, as would a blackmore or fireball head (if you can afford a cab too). EDIT: more likely blackmore, the fireball is probably too modern.

i guess the jcm800 is worth a look, or maybe a splawn/peters/cameron? I haven't tried these, though.
