Carbon Fibre Neck
« on: January 12, 2007, 10:13:48 AM »
Some of you may have seen that I'm currently playing around with a cheapass SG copy at the minute.  I've stripped all the finish off, filled holes, sanded etc etc.  Most of all though, I've reshaped the neck from the rather 'orrid chunky baseball bat (honest to god, thinker than a Gibson) to something asymmetric and a lot thinner.  Unfortunetly as I was drinking beer while reshaping the neck (I'd also has a smoke or two), I went a little too close to the truss rod cavity and I wasn't very happy with the strength of the neck.  So..........

.........I'm doing a carbon fibre laminate on the back of the neck  :guitar4: I'm also going to put a piece on the front, just to look nice.  I'm going to do some experiments over the next few months but I can't do the actual guitar until the summer   (the resin goes cloudy in humidity and it needs to be fairly warm for it to go off).

However, my luthier mate has a cheapass Firebird that I can play about with until then.  So I have another projerct and a missus that's not going to talk to me anymore

I'll start to post pics when I've done something interesting with the carbon  :)

Got enough carbon fibre to do the neck and top for £20.  Still need to get the resin which will cost about £15, so not that expensive at all.

I'll post pics when I can.

That price isnt too bad.

I used to work for a motor racing company who used to produce the carbon fibre chaasis in-house from moulds. All I knew was that the price for the materials was very expensive back then, but I guess that's to make a chassis not a guitar neck! lol

Love the look of raw carbon fibre, all black etc

The price is a bit volatile at the minute as Airbus are using about 25% of the supply of carbon fibre.  It's going up and down a fair bit.

EFC - who did you work for?
