After the Cort, now a BK for my SG
« on: January 12, 2007, 06:22:44 PM »
Hello everyone,

I think i am really settling for the RY or the NB for my Cort PRS-clone guitar. But now i decided to also get something for my Gibson SG.  Well, currently it has a SD Custom 5 on the bridge and a 490 on the neck. I already used the stock 498, and the DImarzio Super Distortion - both were too sterile and not 3D enough.

Well, I still don't think i like the Ceramics route. But after reading a few posts regarding SGs, i think I will go the high output way - after all, this for what the sg was made for, right ?

Yet, i don't want something that will get me a much worse clean sound thant i get with the C5. I never got a great clean from the C5 but this is the pickup that got me the best sound yet. For the distortion tones, i want something modern, not quite metal, but still heavy (APC, Tool, Nickelback...), with a thick low midrange and if possible, something that doesnt have a LOT of hi mids (my amp is a SOldano SLO100 clone thats very bright. I need something with lots of body (more than the C5, which is kinda like a JB without the harshness and less body ) that still will not sound muddy on the SG. I will be playing mainly on drop C#, and i dont want to mess with the volume knob to clean up the clean tones ( i already have to stomp on too many pedals...my brain can't keep up with so much stuff eheh)

So..Warpig? Hollydiver ?

Thanks
Ivan

I think the Holy Diver is the way to go for you, it has darker high midrange than the Rebel Yell, but still a lot of lower mids.
So many pickups, so little time

I just read somewhere that the HD might be too muddy for the SG. I think the NB would also be too muddy, from what i have heard. And the RY ? what do you think?

I just finished fitting my epiphone SG with a pair of Warpigs (not cermaic ones tho), plus a set of new CTS pots all round.  I haven't had a chance to crank the amp up yet as its 1:30 am, but my clean sound is sweet even with the guitar volume dialed round to 8 or 9.  Over the headphones the distortion is mental ... and the range of tones available is amazing. If you're not after a full on old school thrash sound you might be better off with something else, but as you say high gain is what the SG was made for  :D  Its made my evenng anyway!
I'll add some more tmrw after I've had a chance to make some proper noise

OK, the Warpigs clean sound isn't _quite_ as clean as I thought  unless the volume on the guitar is set around 6. If you're prepared to fiddle with the volume dial the 'pigs are pretty darned versatile tho. Certainly made my SG infinity times better than it was with the stock pups.  I freakin' love 'em.
