A couple of Mississippi Queen questions
« on: January 22, 2007, 09:27:16 PM »
Hello tone lovers!

I'm thinking of installing a MQ in the bridge position of a guitar. I notice that the AlnicoV "bridge" MQ has a Dc resistance of around 7.9K with 42 gauge formvar wire. This suggests to me a rather low output - maybe comparable with a PAF-type pickup such as a Mule. But perhaps the geometrical form of the pickup, it *is* a single coil,  changes its relative output power. Anyone know how hot a bridge MQ is? What BKP humbucker would have a roughly equivalent "hotness"?

Anyone know if Tim does an F-spaced MQ ?

Thanks folks,

It is sort of PAF output - my neck one is with a bridge Mule and they go well together in terms of hotness.

As to F space - I don't think so, but the nature of a P90 means that, aesthetics aside, it doesnt matter viz tone.

IMO, the MQ bridge is pretty damn hot...much hotter than I thought it would be. It has GREAT bite, clarity and power in my Gibson Les Paul Special.

In regards to F-Spacing, I believe you would order it as a 53 mm as opposed to a 50 mm pickup and it will matter...the MQ has pole pieces just like a humbucker (albeit only one row). If you have an F-Spaced guitar, I would definitely go with 53 mm. In my case, my Gibson is obviously not F-spaced so my MQ set is 50mm.

The DC is deceptive on a P-90 because there are 2 magnets in it.  They have more output than you think.  An MQ in the neck has no problems keeping up with a Warpig bridge!
So many pickups, so little time

Original stock P90s are always @ DC8K as they're 10000 turns of 42 AWG plain enamel wire.Don't be fooled by DC, it's only a rough indicator of output-as Phil rightly says there's 2 bar magnets powering them so there's plenty of juice.
Sorry no 'F' spaced MQs or P90s.
