Hiwatt hi gain 50
« on: January 31, 2007, 10:09:02 PM »
hi, i have recently been on a quest for a half stack and have been looking around the 50 watt mark and have come across the hiwatt hi gain 50, but can't find any info on it at all!?  hiwatts site is not very descriptive and there seems to be no reviews.
does anyone have any experience or opinions regarding this amp? would it be a good alternative to an orange rocker 30?

cheers

Which site you looking on the .co.uk or the .com

As you probably know HiWatt in the US are almost completely unrelated to the 'real' HiWatt most people think of.

yeah i am looking on the uk site, just doesn't really give a good feel of what the amp is, you know, especially as it just says it has the same clean circuitry as used in the custom range, which is not too helpful considering i don't think i have ever even heard a hiwatt amp before...

haven't tried that one, but the studio/stage combo is very nice, if a bit expensive.

yep, that was no help.

Well Pete Townsend and Dave Gilmour used Hiwatt a lot.

PT definately used them live for almost every Who gig after ditching Marshall in the late 60s (so live at leeds would be a good guide)

To say theyre cleaner than Marshalls is not the right way to phrase it, but they have a sound of their own.

Theyre very loud compared with other manufacturers.

Jacques (mad French guy who makes nice stomp boxes loves them), check out his site http://www.ts808.com/indexbriquevintage2.htm and you may be a little wiser.
Goodbye London !

Try this one for HiWatt info. The guy that owns Music Ground also owns and makes HiWatt Valve amps & JMI (Jennings Music - basically Vox AC's).

He has them made for him - Music Ground are really just retail - no manufaturing.

I recall Music Ground people saying theyre the only Hiwatt retailer in the country or something. So you probably wont find them apart from Leeds and Denmark street. They were recommending the Hi-gain 50 a lot.

that's just wrong (not you, Musicground saying it!). At least one shop in the North, and one in the South (of Ireland), is a Hiwatt dealer.

Unless we're talking about a different hiwatt, which may be possible.

I wouldn't swear to MG being the only Hiwatt dealer, but I've only ever seen new 'UK-made' Hiwatts in MG in recent years.

I've seen the cheapy tranny combos for sale everywhere but I think the US part of Hiwatt are to blame for those audio turds.

I wouldn't touch the new Hiwatt stuff, just get a 2-inputter DR103 and run a good fuzz into it.  Even with the gain on the amp it does great classic rock but I find you have to wind Hiwatts up around half volume otherwise they sound fizzy and thin.

I also think you need a Fane-loaded 4x12 to get the classic Hiwatt tone too.  Keep an eye out for a cab loaded with the old 50w Fanes.  Sound City, Simms Watts and Laney all used these speakers alot too so you could score a 4x12 on ebay with these gems already in rather than pay top-whack for a Hiwatt cab.

My old rig was a DR103 with a Sound City 4x12 - it was Live At Leeds heaven with my old '67 SG jr.
