Magnet experiment
« on: February 28, 2007, 07:15:01 PM »
I just received today the Alnico IV magnet I ordered to Tim. This one will go in the SD '59n of Epi LP.

But in the meanwhile, I dislocated one of the old stock pup from the Epi to retrieve the ceramic magnet. I wanted to do a magnet swap in my Gibby LP between the 490R (AII) and the 498T (AV). But now that I have this spare ceramic magnet I was wondering what it would sound like if I was using it in the 498T.

Any idea or experience? Would it simply be a 500T?

i sold my 500t/496r set today

i tried to use alnico 8 on it but the pickup was weak, even with ceramic mags (i don't know why, cause it was reading 15.7k)
and it had FOUR ceramic bars!
so just one won't sound like a 500t
maybe like a duncan custom

That would actually be nice if it was resembling a custom. From I was told on the SD Forum, the custom would be a good choice for the kind of music I want to play: mainly Alice in Chains stuff.

I might give it a try before the A2 magnet of the 490R.

Would there be any quality issue on the magnet seeing it's coming from a cr@ppy epiphone pup?

hmm... i think i'd prefer it with alnico 8 magnet (about $7 on ebay)
will sound less harsh on highs, fuller on low mids and almost as tight as a ceramic
it keeps that JB like clean and gets very powerful on distortion
in my duncan custom it sounded wonderful
i think you'll get similar results with alnico 8 on 498t
it may get a little muddy on too bright pickups, cause it usually gives a lot more mids than alnico 5, but i think 498t is a little mid hollow like a duncan custom V, so it will probably make the pickup sound a lot fuller
i almost bought a 498t to try this mod, but i already ordered a Holy Diver/Cold Sweat combo

Noted. So far I willgo with what I already have handy. But if I don't like it, surely Tim will be happy enough to provide me an AVIII magnet.

I might start a thread on this actually: I installed the AIV mag in the Epi and played for a week and a half before... the bloody saddle eat the D string again. My little sanding exercise has been useless!

So I am gonna bring the Epi to gigsupplies (local shop, litterally at the corner of my street) to have a tech check saddles, nut and the frets (I got buzz issue on the lower strings). But the point I was comming to is: the sound of the '59n AIV is just amazing. It basically sound like my '59b but in the neck position, so you have this subtle tone variation that is just wonderful to play around with both pup alternately.

Neck output is slightly less than the bridge. So it is really nice switching from to another for rhythm/lead parts successionor rhythm/harder rhythm. I was playing Sunshine of your love just before the D string failed me: It wasjust bliss, or a cream should I say. When the Epi wil behave itelf I will try to do some recording.

 That makes it sound like I've something personal against it! Up to now I've simply found it to be not as effective as AIV or AVI-doesn't mean I won't stop experimenting though :D !

Take the strings off of your guitar and then play it.  Like strings, the player, body wood, and everything else, pickups are necessary but not sufficient to define a player's tone.

Ted Nugent sometimes played soundchecks through Eddie Van Halen's rig from when Damn Yankees opened for VH back in the 1980's.  Not surprisingly, Ted didn't sound anything like EVH.

He still sounded like Ted Nugent.

Check that the grounds are all soldered correctly and that you don't have more than 1 ground wire connecting the same things.  When you run 2 ground wires between the same places you can set up an earth loop which will cause hum
So many pickups, so little time
