Mounting PUps to the body?
« on: March 15, 2007, 10:32:04 AM »
as you all know, flying Vs absolutley suck at tone. they make high output humbuckers sound vintage, mainly due to the giant ass wings that suck up so much string vibration.

anyways, i have recently learned about mounting pickups to the body. how would i go about this while still having a pickguard? i was thinking of using wood filler and shimmed rosewood to cover the gap between the pickup and the guitar, then, when i have achieved the basic hieght i desire, screwing the pup into the body. is this the right way to do this?

suck at tone? no way.... big slabs of mahogany = perfect tone. all it would do is give a slightly warm sound, which is a good thing... I wouldn't say it'd make it sound vintage...

I can't agree more, BIG slabs of mahogany give great tone. I have a double neck wich got that gigantic piece of mahogany (certainly 3 or 4 parts) and it gives the best sustain I've ever had on any guitar, the tone is dark but really good.

Tim told me that the Wings do not transfer the string vibrations back to the pickups very well.

i know that huge slabs of mahogany provide huge tone. hence my gass for an explorer.

seriously, next time you are around a guitar shop, pick up a flying V (any brand will do, preferably gibson tho) and then play it. after youre done, play a guitar of the same manufacturer but not a V. a great comparison is the explorer and the V, although i have even found the LP studios to sound higher output and fatter than the V, even though they have way lower output pups.

Could it be that you are playing Korina V's?  Korina has a totally different response to mahogany, it is a much lighter sounding wood.

Maybe the wood density has a significant effect?

I have an extremely lightweight mahogany V which is very resonant and loud (acoustically).  The resonance and sustain seem to translate into the amplified tone too.

not to highjack your question to the original idea...i've found mounting the pickups to the body changes the tone a little bit at least to my ear.  Your going to get a little more body resonance and at least in my opinion a little better natural tighter bass...mounting them to the body isnt something your going to hear on record by any means, but for my own taste I tend to like the look and sound of direct mounted humbuckers...also if your guitar didnt come with direct mounted humbuckers, screwing them into the wood at a desirable height may mean ordering new pickups with longer legs or using the shims...
