I'm sorry but I havr to disagree with this. You only need to look at musical traditions  including folk and classical to realise that music has always been a document of the human condition, and as such reflects the concerns and experiences of musicians and composers. Invariably this will include politics.

Yes it's obviously desirable to have a variety of subjects addressed through music rather than just poltiical discourse, but you can't go writing off or banning topics from musical treatment. To do so would to ignore some of the greatest pieces of music ever written - Shostakovitch Symphony 5, a great deal of Stravinsky, much of the 1960's English Folk Revival (not to mention much folk music that dates earlier than this), and finally plenty of contemporary (ie 1960's onwards) rock music. To me at least this would be a real shame.

I trust that those who know me (TO, Dakine et al) understand that I'm not tryign to ruffle feathers here, but this kind of wide sweeping generalisation has come to typify the forum in recent months, much to the detriment of discourse, and I suspect I'm not the only person to feel disgruntled about this.

I'm going to go back to being a grumpy old man in silence now.

tom m is a Harvard History grad, but I have read some questionable quotes-quoted on ratm website as saying Cochise was one of the last brave Nat Americans who fought fiercly till the end....he died on a reservation, according to my sources-he could have been mis-quoted,but if not, he would appear  hypocritical(the govt exxagerates/lies/spins all the time-exactly what ratm preaches against...)
..but a rocking riff machine, indeed(I know..its ONLY rock and roll.....)

Rhanooo, you do have a strong point, but people have really gone overboard. I mean, in 1999, RATM burned the American flag onstage. That's just disgusting. I'm sure he'd much rather live in the States than a 3rd world country. Having some degree from a well-reputed University doesn't justify this either.

Well, to be honest, if it's really a free country then they're within their rights to be unhappy with the way it was/is being run.  I believe the burning of the flag was a symbolic gesture which would primarily have meant "We are not happy with the way this country is being run" as opposed to "We wish everyone in this country was dead, this country itself was burnt to the ground and then sank into the ocean"

At least, that's what I'm guessing.

Rage (and Morello) have certainly managed to awaken many people to the wider world outside of their own little one and make them think about politics and the problems that exist in the world today- that has got to be a good thing, if it makes people think.

I'm glad Morello releases a solo album, even if it'll be far different from his  old  signature licks with the whammy & stuff....
