Upgrading an Avion AV7 - Some advice on pickups please
« on: March 21, 2007, 08:49:16 PM »
I have a Samick Avion AV7  and will be upgrading the pots/switches/PUPs. I would welcome some advice on which PUPs to go for. My son says the Mules, and I like the sound of the Crawlers. I dont really know what to go for (he has a VH2 in a Gordon Smith!). I play mostly chords (badly) - The Who, Stones, Free, Bad company and anything simple. Thanks in anticipation

For blues and classic rock, the Mule is one hell of a good pickup.

When I e-mailed Tim, he described the Crawlers as being like a more muscular Mule.

Hope this helps.

If you can wait, come to LGS and try some guitars there.  If not the Crawler has a much higher output than the Mule or the VH2, but does have a great sound.  For the bands you list, I would be tempted to go with a Riff Raff in the bridge and a Stormy Monday in the neck.  None of them really use overwound pickups and they all have the old classic PAF sound.   The Mules are also a great pick in Les Pauls.
So many pickups, so little time
