Warmoth parts ordered - no going back now
« on: March 15, 2007, 11:11:58 PM »
Finally got around to ordering the parts for my Warmoth project this week. The plan has changed a bit from my original idea of a PRS style black korina body, with a flame maple cap finished in transparent black, mahogany neck and ebony fretboard. This all got changed when I found out that the Warmoth PRS style body is bigger and thicker than a PRS, which I didn't want. So...

All that remains from the original idea is the fretboard. The parts actually ordered consist of:
Mahogany Soloist style body with...
Koa carved top
Finish - Clear gloss
Birdseye maple neck, 3 aside Eggle(ish) headstock
Jet black ebony fretboard with compound radius and jumbo fretwire
Sperzel locking tuners
Wilkinson trem (recessed)
1 volume, 1 tone, 3-way switch, coil tap on tone pot
And 2 Open poled Warpigs.

The only downside is I now have to wait about 11 weeks for the parts to arrive, which is going to be a mild form of torture. Still, it will hopefully be worth the wait.

sounds like a nice combo, i love Koa but dont get to build with it often

Normally i would steer clear of a ebony and maple neck but coupled with mahogany and koa for the body it should be perfect

Not at all. The body and neck, with both finished and the neck fretted and a graphite nut fitted, inlcuding shipping VAT and import tax (worked out at worst-case-scenario rate) kick out at about £615.

Then looking at about £110 for hardware, pots, switches etc. So all in, about £720.

Thankfully I already have the pickups, otherwise it really wouldn't be doable. It's only really practical right now cos the dollar is weak. Hopefully it'll stay that way for a while, because I want to do another one!

As far as the neck woods go, I thought a mahogany neck might end up sounding a bit dark. The guy at Warmoth told me it would be a pretty good match, but that reassurance from Wez is very welcome - thanks man!

11 weeks-phew that is a bit of a wait but by the sounds of things, it'll be worth it. Best of luck with the project.

^Thankyou Mr 38th. The wait will be excruciating. It's only been five days and I'm already bouncing off the walls!

I will of course post pics once it's finished!

FWIW, the wait is rarely as long as they say it is - the sales guys seem to believe in "under promise & over deliver"

Both my first 2 Warmoth orders took much less time than they said.

(my 3rd order doesn't count as I picked finished items from the showcase + parts that were all in stock & received them 2 days later :))

Even if it did - 11 weeks to make a body & neck from scratch & finish them isn't bad.  It'll come round sooner than you think...

I've also found they tend to deliver quicker than they originally say. I ordered a neck from them back in January that they said would take 5 weeks, but it was at my door in less than 3 weeks. They also use UPS for shipping, who got the neck from Warmoth (in Washington state) to my house  (in Hampshire, UK) in 36 hours, really impressive.

I'm about to order a replacement (chambered) strat body to 'complete' the refurbishment of my strat, and I expect they'll give me a 10-12 week wait time. However, that's not too bad....when I ordered my Brook acoustic I had to wait 10 months before collecting it ;-)

I find it depends what you are asking for.  Since you are having them finish it, it will take longer than if they were just making it.  TO just got his new neck from them and it took the full 6 weeks they quoted (and that was unfinished).  You are also askiing for jet black ebony on the fingerboard, which may delay the neck as the ebony they seem to be using at the moment has some streaks in it.

I just picked up a natural finished Mockingbird body and an aframosa one piece neck from the closeout shop ($350 for both!!).  The body was returned because it got a chip on the horn in shipping and the original customer wanted to get a new one.  You can't see the chip from the front (it is the back of the lover horn), and anyway I can refin that bit if it looks worse in real life than their picture).
So many pickups, so little time

I think I saw that Mockingbird on their website, it's beautiful, even with the chip :)
I'm quite interested in the fact that Warmoth make Iceman bodies (but not the vintage Ibanez headstocks) and the Charvel Star bodies, although it seems they are slightly different to the originals around the neck joint area. They never have those in the showcase though.
