Suggestions for my new pickups please!
« on: March 21, 2007, 05:24:03 PM »
Well hello der! I mentioned on the other thread (introduction) that I wanted to put some new pick ups in my Tokai les paul...ahh what the hell, here's the post!

Quote
Tokai Les Paul (I believe it's a ALS70) thinking about putting a Black Dog at the bridge & a stormy monday at neck or mule at bridge & an Emerald at neck

Do you think that either of those combinations would work? I play blues, rock  etc. any one any help?

Never heard anything bad about Mules, and it seems they're a favourite for Les Pauls.

Alot of Luthiers that use BKPs seem to use Mule Sets for their Les Pauls, think that's what Feline do.

But I've also heard that Black Dogs are awesome for Led Zep tones, so if that's the kind of thing you're going for then I suggest coming down to LGS and trying some for yourself :p

Yeah, if you have questions about pickups you should try the EMG and Seymour Duncan forums...

he meant it should be in the "pickups" section rather than "gutiars, amps and effects"

An Emerald bridge and Mule AIV neck is a great combination, as is a Riff Raff bridge and Stormy Monday neck.  Both are good for Blues/Rock playing,  the Emerald/Mule giving a little more gain than the Riff Raff/Stormy Monday.  The Black Dogs are Jimmy Page all the way.
So many pickups, so little time

A pair of Alnico 4 mules will give you a great sounding LP - very versatile whilst having a thick 59 LP sound

If you put an Emerald in the bridge the sound shifts a bit more like an old LP custom which at times had a hotter bridge pickup (this is what the Emerald is supposed to replicate - think Thin Lizzy era Brian Robertson)

Consider ugrading pots and putting in new capacitors too - can make a big difference

I will have my sunburst LP at the show
